In an earlier posting, you said you had been around politics since 1972. That’s about the same time I started noticing things, as well.

Let me ask you a question:

In 1972, if I had told you that in twenty years the mighty Soviet Union would crumble and cease to exist as a nation, and if had told you that it would split into a “Commonwealth of Independent States”, what would you have told me in return?

C’mon, be honest with your reply...

The “mighty Soviet Union” got that way by conquering a group of extant countries. It didn’t start as a large, amorphous territory that then organized a la the USA. Its dissolution amounted to allowing those countries to become extant once more.

Exactly. Or Yugoslavia, or Czechoslovakia (at least that was a peaceful breakup and a good blueprint) or the Sudan (well maybe we might have seen that one coming).
