My theory has it that anyone using the internet is vulnerable in that a modem connection works both ways.

All my folders and files are, for instance, automatically held elsewhere by Carbonite (for a fee) in case my computer crashes.

Given that, it's quite probable that others can watch over everything in our computers through modems.

Keep all of your stuff that you would rather not have anyone else seeing encrypted with GPG encryption. Can be downloaded for free. Even the NSA can’t currently break it. JUST BE SURE THAT YOU DON’T LOSE YOUR SECRET KEY. Make a couple of copies on flash drives. Even with your key your encryption can’t be broken without your passphrase. Make it reasonably long. eg “drunk with fatigue deaf even to the hoots of tired outstripped five nines”
