On a conference call with House Republicans a day after the partys electoral battering last week, Speaker John A. Boehner dished out some bitter medicine, and for the first time in the 112th Congress, most members took their dose.
Their party lost, badly, Mr. Boehner said, and while Republicans would still control the House and would continue to staunchly oppose tax rate increases as Congress grapples with the impending fiscal battle, they had to avoid the nasty showdowns that marked so much of the last two years.
Members on the call, subdued and dark, murmured words of support even a few who had been a thorn in the speakers side for much of this Congress.
It was a striking contrast to a similar call last year, when Mr. Boehner tried to persuade members to compromise with Democrats on a deal to extend a temporary cut in payroll taxes, only to have them loudly revolt.
With President Obama re-elected and Democrats cementing control of the Senate, Mr. Boehner will need to capitalize on the chastened faction of the House G.O.P. that wants to cut a deal to avert sudden tax increases and across-the-board spending cuts in January that could send the economy back into recession. After spending two years marooned between the will of his loud and fractious members and the Democratic Senate majority, the speaker is trying to assert control, and many members seem to be offering support.

Obama's voters said" Who gives a hoot about the deficit?" That's union members grabbing at their pensions and all the rest of it, Krugman, "It doesn't matter, " etc., etc. The Republicans voters will punish them for giving in on the debt, especially if they allow funding of Obamacare.
Time to ride Bonehead out of the Capital building on a rail and on national TV. I wonder what this administration has on him. You don’t suppose the SHTF with Petraeus has him worried do ya?
You said it your self.
Bonehead has a history of screwing conservatives.
How do u predict future behavior?
By past behavior.
Boehner needs to go. We need a leader in the House that will fight like Patton, not a politician.
It's all going down the hopper anyway. Senate ignores everything passed.
A third party can only succeed if it is formed by the splitting off of the Republican Party. I believe if the Texas delegation leaves, many other states would quickly join them in the revolt.
higher taxes and no real spending cuts?
Excuse my ignorance, but since we get a new congress in January, isn’t there a vote for speaker? We sure need a new one.
Rush is wrong here, in my humble opinion. If the GOP gives in, the resulting disaster would STILL be blamed on everyone else but the dem's.
The MSM would blame Europe, China, conservative PAC's, Clint Eastwood, sunspots, etc., etc. And most people would believe it.
Better that the House go into a prevent mode and hope that another Reagan appears before 2016.
Treasonous RINO:
Our Fast&Furious, our ObamaCARE nightmare from which WE are excused,
Benghazi and our coverup, and my support for increased taxation, open borders, and the Moslem Brotherhood
is now a "done deal". Like Colin Powell, and Chris Christie, you can absolutely count on me. Take it to the Bank.
Since America has no run-off system, the end result: dem's win every election.
We are a winner take all two party system with no chance for coalition government. In general elections, especially at the national level, most of us will always have to vote for the least bad option.
All this bluster about starting a new party is nonsense. There are deadenders every cycle who will waste their votes on such silliness, but they will never amount to squat.
Yes, conservatives need to get behind primary candidates early - but we need GOOD candidates. We are struggling mightily at the state and national level and part of that problem is (at the state level anyway) is nominating poor candidates. People like Angle, O'Donnell, Akin, etc, are awful. We need to avoid those kind of joke candidates. Nationally, goofballs like Herman Cain need to be weeded out right away. That so many conservatives were rallying around a guy running a glorified book tour (paid for by campaign contributions) was just pathetic. We need conservatives that are polished candidates, skilled politicians and happy warriors.
The Republican Party needs to stick to Conservative principles and Conservative candidates.
If we begin to chase power and control at the price of our values, we are lost as a country and the Constitutional Republic has failed.
FIRE BOEHNER!
You do realize Rand is a senator and NOT in the House?
The rino establishment types will ensure we get someone just as rino as boehner if not more.
Just quoting Rush
We need to dump people lik Crist, Spectre and other liberal Republicans more than anything.
Trouble is - Americans have become a nation of "Spineless Wimps" !
