(CNSNews.com) -- Although the Republican-dominant House of Representatives controls the federal purse strings, House Speaker John Boehner (R-Ohio) said that Tuesdays election victory by President Barack Obama changed how he will approach the GOP goal of repealing the health reform law, saying that the presidents reelection made it the law of the land.
Well, I think the election changes that. Its pretty clear that the president was re-elected. Obamacare is the law of the land, Boehner told ABC News Diane Sawyer in an interview Thursday when asked if the House GOP would still make repeal its mission.
However, Boehner also said that the law was still on the table, noting that he still considered it bad policy and that it was not off limits as he begins negotiations with Obama over key budgetary issues.
As House Speaker, Boehner can prevent any funding for Obamacare or any aspect of it through amendments to funding legislation, to a continuing resolution, or by simply not allowing a floor vote on the funding.
I think there are parts of the health care law that are going to be very difficult to implement and very expensive and, at a time when were trying to find a way to create a path toward a balanced budget, everything has to be on the table, he said in the ABC interview.
When pressed, Boehner clarified that no decision had been made yet over which parts of the law would be included in negotiations, saying that parts of the law could be on the table.
There are certainly maybe parts of it that we believe need to be changed we may do that, no decisions at this point, he said.
Boehner repeated during the interview that he viewed Obamas reelection and Republicans failure to achieve a Senate majority as a mandate from the American public for the two parties to work together, saying that it was simply the hand he was dealt.
I may not like the five cards that were dealt to me but those are the cards Ive got in my hand, he said. Now my job on behalf of the American people is to find a way to work with my Democrat colleagues and our Democrat President to solve Americas problems. If there was one mandate that came out of the election, it was [to] find a way to work together to address our problems.
Boehners office clarified his remarks about repeal of Obamacare on Thursday, after excerpts of the interview were released to the public. His official Twitter account posted a message saying that he remained committed to full repeal of the law.
ObamaCare is the law of the land, but it is raising costs and hurting #smallbiz. Our goal remains #fullrepeal, Boehner tweeted.
Boehner spokesman Kevin Smith also clarified the Speakers intentions on Obamacare, saying that House Republicans were committed to repealing the law despite the reelection of its namesake president.
While Obamacare is the law of the land, it is costing us jobs and threatening our health care, Smith told the liberal website Talking Points Memo. Speaker Boehner and House Republicans remain committed to repealing the law, and he said in the interview it would be on the table.
Obamas reelection has made repeal of the law extremely difficult for Republicans after they failed to secure a Senate majority and a President who would sign repeal legislation. Obama has repeatedly stated that he has no intention of negotiating over the law and Senate Democrats have refused to vote on multiple repeal bills sent to them by the House.
Probably just a despair-induced fantasy, but what the hey...
Yeah, tell me when that all works out. K.
I will support that in any way I can. I am ten years away from the “no treatment” cutoff so I can say that somewhat selfishly. We must have a way to move a large segment of the population to our side. The over 60 population is a good start.
We should come together here first. I’m working on a draft letter. It maybe will be ignored. No big deal, have been ignored before. Where there is a will, there is a way. We have have to decide as a nation if we, each of us is an individual. I think there is a way to turn this around. I pray there is a way, am ready to work for a way, and know the individuals on this site are the most intelligent of all forums. Should “we” try?
Hey, I might need your help some day, but not today.
Getting it in writing will be beneficial. It will be mocked as a “strongly worded letter” until people read it.
I want a “leader” that will say FU to the media and say “bring it on” to any executive order Obammie wants to shove through. Someone to represent the pissed off Republicans by fighting for survival not caving in now when we are still moments from crashing and burning anyways.
Speaker of the White Hut
John Boehner has a vagina.
Mr. mm and I are not far behind.
Boehner = Traitor.
So we trust God for healing, or die.
Well, this world is not my home anyway.
The House will be voting for a new speaker in a few weeks. Isnt there some way we could mount a campaign to get rid of Bonehead?
Boehner knows that he is safe because no rising star will want the job. With amnesty right around the corner this is going to get UGLY quick after inauguration/SOTU. The dims will just keep pounding the GOP on every issue as long as they are in disarray and retreating.
It looks like they want to knock off all the useless eaters who they can't force to work in their slave labor camps to support them when the economy collapses.
Since when is “Boehner capitulates” breaking news?
There should be a category called “what else is new?”
Get the best deal?
You are kidding aren’t you?
You know cry baby will get rolled.
The GOP is a subset of the KKKDNC.
I called the RNC and told them to get me off the list and I will unenroll on Tuesday.
Time for a third party.
