It can withstand a nuclear bomb, asteroid blasts and terror attacks while staying airborne for days without refueling: It's the president's $223 million 'doomsday' plane and it's on standby 24 hours a day, 365 days a year, ready to launch at a minute's notice.
The United States' so-called Doomsday plane is a jumbo jet on steroids, set apart from other Boeing 747's by its radiation-protected shell, 67 antennae and satellite dishes that can communicate with anyone on the ground, advanced heating and cooling systems and loads of other high-tech top-secret gear.
In the case of a national disaster, the plane's four turbofan jet engine can fly for days without refueling and it can reach speeds of up to 620 miles per hour, whereas commercial planes can only fly up to 580 miles per hour.

The country is worth saving. Not Obama and his court jester Biden! Of course Obama is an American hero,...after all, he single-handedly killed bin Laden.
If they could make it only a little bit more high-tech, could it possibly reach escape velocity?
This is just silly. If everyone else is dead who’s Obama gonna tax? In that situation he would probably just off himself.
**Former president Ronald Reagan made the country's doomsday plan a top priority during his administration.
Reagan put his chief of staff, Donald Rumsfield, and then-congressman Dick Cheney in charge of his 'continuity of government' plan.**
[Fact check: Donald Rumsfeld was never Pres. Ronald Reagan's chief of staff. He was Pres. Jerry Ford's chief of staff. That was long before this plane was built.]
Its not Obamas plane, its Americas. We are just acting stupidly and letting him use it.
Much of the country's emergency preparation falls to the Federal Emergency Management Agency, or FEMA, which also handles natural disasters, such as Superstorm Sandy.
Roughly 30 percent of FEMA head Craig Fugate's job is dealing with the secret continuity programs, according to U.S. News and World Report.**
FEMA? Must be a joke. Sign on the HQ of FEMA in NY during the snow storm Sandy....
An airborn craft surviving a nuclear blast is one thing, but an asteroid strike is entirely another. There would be an element of sheer luck in geography for one, but you’ve got to land eventually. The aftermath of an asteroid strike of sufficient scale to warrant taking off in this plane is not going to be kind to airport runways, possibly worldwide. Those engines will be sucking an astounding amount of airborn detritus after a while, too.
Nice idea, but those on board will merely get to survey the destruction for a few days before crashing and dying themselves, imho.
It’s got the makings of a great Twilight Zone episode.
...and Moosechelle....maybe the family dog is worth saving. :(
Does this plane fly everywhere Obama does? If not what good is it with Obama constantly flying around in Air Force One.
If Obama is in Hawaii what good is this plane at Andrews? If it does go everywhere he is, that is more expense to the taxpayers.
Do they let Wide Load use it?
“It can withstand a nuclear bomb”
I doubt it.
Prolly there won't be anybody on the ground to communicate with. We will all be dead. Sad, really really sad.
He just wants to be able to communIcate with the Muslim Brotherhood and Putin.
“It’s all about saving my own a## how many times do I have to say F U” from dreams of my fathers father the sequel
i hope the next four years zip by so we can have a more down to earth administration
That is the most damning sign regarding government incompetence I have ever seen. That is why emergency management out to be US Army function, at least the boots on the ground part. Food, water, sanitation, clothing, housing in places without any infrastructure is what they do and do competently.
I doubt it can stay airborne for days w/o air to air refueling. That would be its’ weakness.
Something will malfunction; if it has not already. Nothing is foolproof.
