There is a simple explanation— those independents he won, were Republicans in previous election cycles. They just became disillusioned Republicans for various reasons, and stopped wanting to be called Republicans— even here at FR, that sentiment exists strongly (vote conservative, not Republican).
If that is the case, then we are so vastly outnumbered that the Democrats can have millions show up, and still win. I don’t see that being the case in states like Ohio, Virginia, and Florida. All three have Republican governors, and Republican-heavy congressional delegations. You are correct to point out the people on here who now refuse to identify as “Republican”; there are also a lot who said they would never vote for Mitt Romney under and circumstances, and it looks like they didn’t.
