If we do nothing, that is where this will ultimately wind up. We can't have a political party that engages in the kind of divisive rhetoric the democrats do election after election and blindly assume it will have no effect. Or that we can ever give enough ground to placate the anger it generates on both sides.
If Obama's goal is the destruction of the United States (and that is hardly an illogical supposition) then he would be happy to agree to the division.
