Runner Eliza Wierzbinska frowns with her marathon number at the Javits Center on Saturday. Even though she lives in New York City, she has sympathy for the runners who traveled in for the marathon and spent a lot of money to get to the Big Apple.
Marathoner Heather Nerhood, after flying in from Texas for the now-canceled race, couldnt just cool her heels Saturday.
Along with hundreds of other disappointed marathoners, Nerhood burned off her frustration by running through Central Park.
We were upset [Friday] because the announcement was made while we were at the Javits Center picking up our bibs, said Nerhood, a 41-year-old kindergarten teacher, referring to Mayor Bloombergs last-minute change of heart that slammed the brakes on the race.

Bloomberg’s the silly ‘effing sock puppet in this fiasco. The real greedy narcissistic villains are the New York Road Runners, the local sponsors and organizers of the event. Despite being on the ground when the storm hit they’re the ones that assured their big bucks corporate sponsors and NYC gov that all would be right by race day. NYRR socks away a nice bit of change and prestige points in the runners world for this event, but they’re blind to the world outside.
The first NYC marathons were confined to Central Park with minimal disruption, if any, to normal NYC city life and transportation but the bucks started getting bigger along with their egos and so it grew becoming this big azzed silly media event with savy retailers, hoteliers, street vendors trying to seize the bucks these running rubes were willing to drop.
Try and remember when feel good causes, runs for the cure of whatever, weren’t the over hyped norm for these events. Ever see a balance sheet from any one of them that showed revenue and how much actually was disbursed to whatever cause?
As a cancer survivor I don’t recall waking up after surgery and saying, “well thank goodness for all those runners concerned with my well being. I’m feeling ever so much better knowing that they ran that marathon for me.”
I’ve got no beef with the runners doing the race in reasonable weather, just don’t get in our way, especially when disaster strikes and we need helping hands not prima donnas. Oh, and stop puking in our streets even in good times ‘cause you’re not up for the task at hand. It stinks the joint up.
We’re did pretty okay here from Sandy(I live on the Jersey Shore) we lost power for a two days and had some minor damage, nothing serious, thank God but I’ve been a bit distracted. Can’t run a bloody race, oh boo hoo. Honestly!
And these are you OTHER Obama voters. You know the same people who leave Grandma to die in a French apartment during a heat wave because they have a vacation planned.
Then you sir are a Jackass. It is embarrassing to read of "conservatives" endangering bicyclists on public roads.
While I would never come close to a bicyclist if I can possibly avoid it, in truth, these bicyclist are the ones who endanger themselvs. They wander all over the road and rarely stop for red lights. If drivers didn’t watch out for them they would all be dead by now.
I agree.
Yes it is, although one could probably find a similar attitude among other types of athletes. Perhaps because it's not a team sport, running seems to encourage in some people a nearly pathological self-centeredness.
My niece is NOT narcissistic. She is a very athletic, competitive girl. I took up running after my first triple bypass, and there’s a great deal of personal satisfaction in doing five miles before work.
Go back and run around the plains of Texas for a few weeks...
Self centered, arrogant or pompous freaks.
“I was robbed
If only someone near that person at that moment had said: “By an ‘act of G-d’ you idiot; you want to complain, you feel sorry for yourself, take it up with Him.”
‘I feel like I was robbed’
WELCOME TO THE BIG APPLE...
She should sue God and that freak running NY for putting her through hell. Better yet, she should sue the storm victims for getting priority over her.
Mayor Domberg should have cancelled it days and days before he did
More than a few are like that. There is some kind of exhibitionism, also.
A few weekends ago I took the girls to Portland, OR. On the way we stopped at Multnomah Falls, a tall waterfall with a visitor's center just off the highway.
Many tourists get their first good view of the falls when they emerge from the under-highway pedestrian walkway (tunnel). There it is, the waterfall, right in front of you.
Well, this idiot runner/hyperfitness/triathalon type guy was hanging from the rafter of the underpass right at the exit, doing pullups and blocking the view. He was dressed in the show-all spandex panties or whatever they were and no doubt a Portland liberal. His porpoising profile is the main thing you saw at that point.
But the show wasn't over. After completing the exhibition at the tunnel he then proceeded to do stair runs up and down the very same stairs the tourists use to get to the viewing platforms for the waterfall. It went on and on, past these old ladies with canes and assorted other visitors who will never be running up or down stairs.
There must be 599 million other places, even nice, pleasant ones, within 50 miles of Portland where this jerk could have done his routine. But no, he picked the tourist gateway.
“And here, girls, we have an example of the subspecies, ‘Narcissistic Athlete.’ Having grown bored with admiring the muscular definition of his buttocks in his full-length bedroom mirror, he has chosen to expose the view to all of us, as if we’ve never changed a diaper. You will notice that he also has a carefully-packaged p3nis, of which he must be very proud, or he’d have kept it to himself. Other male humans also have them, but none so marvellous as his, at least to him.”
Just a thought ...
Fortunately, my girls were doing their best to see the waterfall and looked right past him.
The other people who are p.o.’ed are the victims of Hurricane Sandy. They are being screwed by governmental incompetence on the local, state, and federal levels. How about that FEMA, boys and girls? Completely unprepared, but they get a pass because a Donkey is POTUS. How about those kind souls in the IBEW Union that refuse to allow non-union work crews restore power to ease the suffering of fellow citizens? How about Mayor Bloomberg saying the NY ANG must be unarmed if they work in his city, because only NYPD can carry arms here [and the thugs]. Is it the police union or just Bloomberg being the anti-gun moron he's known to be? Then there's Obama’s and Christie's photo op. Political theater, except people are still without water, food, heat, and shelter and neither of you accomplished a thing.
HEY! Marathon runners!
A “compromise” is when EVERYBODY is unhappy! Deal with it.
BTW, our US politicians are experts at compromise - - - . They compromise with us voters everyday.
I never understood the point of expending enormous effort to toss a ball through a net ...
Running, OTOH, is self justifying.
These people are being selfish twits.
