Copernicus dedicated his book, On the Revolution of the Celestial Orbs, in which he gives an excellent account of heliocentricity, to Pope Paul III. His research was funded by a bishop.

Obviously, the Church didn't oppose the theory of heliocentrism per se, unlike the Lutherans. What the Church opposed was Galileo's demand that the Church teach heliocentrism as dogma. Otherwise the Church would have opposed Copernicus.

Ironically, while Galileo was right about heliocentrism, his science was flawed, and didn't prove his theory.
