I’m in the business of determining “Root Cause”, when a problem occurs.
In this case that will include determining motives that might explain the behavior of our decision makers.
Incompetence and indifference are insufficient explanations, in the face of all of the warnings over an extended period.
Without examining all of the possibilities here, there is only one scenario that is consistent with all of the facts available.
All security was removed to facilitate the kidnapping of Christopher Stevens.
This would have set up the negotiations for his release, which would have required that we give up the Blind Sheikh, Omar Abdel-Rahman.
Remember that the ex-CIA security agents who arrived on scene and were later killed, were told to “stand down”.
Without their protecting fire, Stevens could have been taken with little trouble.
Wish I could locate the original story that expanded on this, but it’s the only scenario constant with all of the evidence.
To determine 'root cause' one needs to know why Stevens was sent to Benghazi in the first place on September 11, 2012. Most especially when apologizes were already made in Cairo over a fake offensive video before any protests ever started.
Based upon all that I have read/heard to date it appears that canned fake video was to be a separate covert mission than what went down in Benghazi. To date all the participants in this attack in Benghazi have not been identified. I do not think we know how many vehicles/terrorists showed up for this take down. The way it sounds there was many more than just one group in on the action.
I say this based upon what Obama said to the UN. There is no doubt he knew the details by that time and yet he again was acting like a whipped pup over a fake offensive video.
But the murders/robbers/and rioters have whatever intel that was on-sight. And as far as I can tell there is no longer a mission in Benghazi. The only secrets being kept are being kept from US, sure not the terrorists.
Has El-Sharef been heard from again?

This is similar to what I have been posting here off and on for several weeks. Others such as yourself have made posts citing credible evidence. I have just been speculating.
My initial reaction was that this was the botched “October Surprise” that was meant to take the attention of voters away from the sad state of the economy. The "bad guys" would hold Christopher Stevens until a week or so before the election and then a heroic rescue would be made. The problem was that in their attempt to smoke him out of the “safe” room the attackers killed him.
To me this would appear to be a classic botched evil Obama plan. It is like the whole birth certificate controversy; they think that they are smarter than everyone else, but they can't even produce a decent forgery of the long form. But the media has given him a free pass on everything. Once again their gross incompetence have resulted in the deaths of brave Americans... fortunately not as many as when the Seal Team helicopter was shot down after Obama outed them for political gain.
Obama is not just incompetent his actions appear to be treacherous in the most extreme manner possible. To me it appears that he and a number of collaborators should be facing prosecution.
As it was the only two fatalities there were due to smoke inhalation. I've seen pictures of the rescue vehicle with consultate people standing around during the 'attack' as if there is no incoming fire.
The two SEALs, having driven to the consulate and back, were killed at the CIA annex, which WAS under fire.
