Massachusetts Mayor Bans the Word Illegal for Illegal Immigrants By Elizabeth Harrington November 2, 2012
(CNSNews.com) The mayor of Somerville, Mass., has banned the use of the term illegals when referring to illegal aliens.
Mayor and Alderman Joe Curtatone announced the new policy at a local board meeting last week, according to the Somerville Journal.
The decision was made after a team of youths urged the city to stop using the hurtful term. I hadnt given it a thought until they brought to my attention how hurtful that term is, Board President Tom Taylor said. Some of their testimony is pretty heart wrenching.
One testimony came from Elis Melara, a 14-year-old whose cousin was deported by U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) last year. The way he said those words made me angry, she said, referencing the word illegal.
The officer made him seem like a criminal. He was talking about my cousin like he didnt matter. He matters to me, Melara said. The word illegal is a wrong way to describe a human being. A better word is undocumented. I am thankful that I am an American and can do something about it.
Curtatone, who is serving his fifth term as mayor since being elected in 2003, said his community has always been a city of hope for immigrants around the world.
We made it clear here that whatever your status is, wherever youre from, we are your mayor, were your aldermen, this is your city and were here to service you, he said. Anyone who wants to be a part of this city is welcome here.

Good to see it’s still okay to call them ‘illegal aliens’.
(-:
Maybe they could scratch out the name PREDATOR, or child molester, any registry files, shouldn´t make any difference, and felons, they shouldn´t have to mark that X in the box looking for a job... Can´t be partial, needs to be across the board, no distinction.
The officer made him seem like a criminal”
That is because he is a criminal.
Political correctness is dictating how we discuss issues, and what words we are allowed to use.
The fact is that these people are here illegally, but inconvenient truths must be banned................
Or I should say inconvenient truths which run counter to the liberal narrative of an issue must be banned. We must censor our speech so as not to offend the sensibilities of liberals.
And how do we describe anyone who commits any crime? How do we describe prisoners who were convicted of crimes, who did something illegal? What is the politically correct term for prisoners or criminals of any type????
I realize Sommerville is probably as left-wing a city can get in the U.S — on par w/ Berkeley, but really, someone should send this guy a copy of the 1st Amendment.
(IIRC this is the same town that banned nuke bombs in the 80s or 90s).
Mayor Joe Curtatone has a good point. I’m going to start calling them “criminal aliens”. It’s much more precise than the worn out phrase “illegal aliens”, which has lost so much of its impact.
You can't make this stuff up !
I will not be held responsible for the feelings of anyone but myself.
I will use the words I deem most accurate for the issue being discussed.
Therefore, anyone who is not here legally is by defition illegal. So sue me
The new thinkspeak dictionary is being written as we watch.
I would like to hear the answer to your question cuz we sure don’t want to hurt anyone’s feeeeeeeeeeeeeeeelings!
Why don’t we just give in and call them what Colin Powell called them...”Precious People.” That is how they’re treated, that is how they consider themselves, and someday soon it will be against the law to criticize or offend them, so we might as well get it over with. I’ve been sarcastically calling them “the Precious People” for some time now, just waiting for it to be official.
They don’t call it ‘Slum-orville’ for nothing..
Maybe if Joe Curtatone hired someone to come over to his house and perform, say some landscaping, and the landscaper came over with five of his friends.
And let’s just say they decided that after doing some landscaping that they were interested in what the Mayor had in his refrigerator and medicine cabinet and invited themselves into the Mayor’s home (un-invited of course).
And maybe they decided to start living in the Mayor’s basement. Would the Mayor find himself calling the police and saying the following; there are people that are not documented residents of my home, living in my home and using my stuff and eating my food...please come and help them.
I don’t want you to kick them out of the country, I just don’t want them living in my home and using my stuff for free.
No, no, I’m pretty sure he would want them arrested for trespassing and theft, but, I could be wrong.
“We made it clear here that whatever your status is, wherever youre from, we are your mayor, were your aldermen, this is your city and were here to service you, he said. Anyone who wants to be a part of this city is welcome here.”
What? Isn’t this a call-out for all criminals to move there? Since breaking the law doesn’t really matter to him. Wonder how the law abiding citizens of his city feel about that. :(
If "Illegal Immigrants" are now "Undocumented Workers", then when I was an active crack head, I was not an "Illegal Drug User", I was merely an "NonPrescribed Substance Patient".
Oh, and when I shoplifted, I was an "Undocumented Shopper".
Back in the day, we used to refer to the town as “Slum-erville”. Sounds like they continue to live down to their reputation.
the hurtful term
Illegals’ and muzzies’ feelings are easily hurt
when they aren’t killing the rest of us.
