In the 2nd debate, he never said there was a rescue attempt being made, he talks as if the event had already passed. Here’s the 3rd debate quote and comparison;

But, if he received the call and no help came, that surely makes the lie worse. He could not walk it back. It simply looks like an attempt to simply talk enough so that everything sounds like nonsense.
