I'm a "Sallie"(salvation army) man myself. I know they are the most efficient charity around, in cost to service ratio.
The Red Cross did somethings for the people in Johnstown PA after the flood. It was the Salvation Army that really led the way for the people there. Ask anyone in Johnstown. The Salvation Army cares about people in general and helps everyone. I notice they are not in the limelight of helping Sandy’s Victims. Could it be they believe it is better to help people rather than getting press coverage while trying to raise funds?
