So they just assume if they receive a dem ballot, it was a vote for Obama and a republican ballot is a vote for Romney?

I believe they do...and that may turn out to be a huge error for them.

If we consider the small percentage of folks who vote for the opposite party, I believe that percentage is larger this cycle for the dems that the reps.

I'm no poll expert. However if we hypothetically say that 5% of reps will vote Obama and 8% of dems will vote Romney (just pulling the numbers out of thin air), it seems to me it would blow these early voting tabulations out of the sky.

In my hypothetical, Romney would be a few points higher than being reported.

I wonder if anybody knows what the current poll numbers are on people who are voting against their party?

That is why I believe relying too much on these absentee ballots if foolish. I think quite a few dems will vote for Romney and can’t imagine many republicans voting for Dumbo.
