NEW YORK (AP) Television networks offered compelling pictures and a gripping narration of the monster storm that put Monday on hold for millions of people in the eastern part of the country and more than a few mixed messages, too.
Anchors and reporters repeatedly urged viewers to stay at home and stay safe during the storm, yet they solicited pictures and videos to show evidence of Hurricane Sandy's might and displayed them on the air.
Reporters with rain dripping off their windbreakers expressed incredulity at civilians walking around outside, like when CNN's Ashleigh Banfield noted joggers at New York's Battery Park City.

Reporters act like this is the greatest calamity to hit mankind.
It’s the mentality that only government can do anything, a liberal malady. The reality is government at any level is mostly worthless.
Ashleigh Banfield hasn’t lost her touch for saying inane things. Didn’t know she is still on the air anywhere.
CNN has been terrible....
They had one guy going “Area is devastated, i’m standing in water up to my ankles”.
Their best report last night was the amazing reporting of flags blowing in strong wind in DC. Wow.
I was expecting more but, now I’m off to watching Tivo’d NCIS.
Best one was about 30 mins ago on CNN.....reporting that Snowshoe Mountain ski resort was errrr covered in snow.
Wish it was Heavenly in Lake Tahoe.
I’d chance muffing up my arm to go riding deep powder but, gotta wait another year before this thing heals....
Unless....
It’s all about today’s “drama queen” mentality.
They just love to hype disaster, Wolf was getting antsy last night because he could not get ordinary people going into hysterics about how bad people thought the storm was, most were going “meh, seen worse”.
Wolf was not a happy bunny
CNN still showing on repeat the one person they could find going “i’m scared to death, so many are going to die today”.
Oh lookey Soledad O’Brien is now on and out and about on CNN, could she not have stood a bit closer to the eye of the storm, watch this for epic whoppers and exaggeration now.
Lol -- how did you ever sleep after seeing such a thing?
taking a chill pill might help.
Why is Michelle swimming in NY Harbour.
Fox News is gnashing teeth well enough for all
Wind on my little horse digs outside Nashville is gusting twice what is recorded on TWC for Manhattan right now
36 degrees and 45 gusts....
Course i am lacking a storm surge which at my 1100 feet would be truly epic
I am sorry....the pop concentrations there make it a nightmare even with oderate trop storms
Fortunately shore relief in the northeast is relatively sharp and many variables make epic hurricanes difficult to muster.....1938 and Hazel being really the only two past 90-100 years
However i do not recall NY harbor being in the bucket...like this...in my lifetime..55
As a former resident i would think battery park....fulton street and maybe LES AT risk....flooding
Worst will be power outtages and riverbank issues.....i know they had surge...not up to date on rain totals
Appalachia....big snow...calling for 2 feet in Boone NC area....pretty early for that much
My daughter number 2 is in Park Slope....her cell was working and power off and on...being high not much flooding there
As i recall.....long beach long island....truly low relief.... probably took a hit
VA barrier islands low too
