They actually sell products to make your hair look like that. The dreads can be washed w/o *ruining the look* and may actually help w/that.
OTOH, there is a “No ‘poo” (as in *shampoo* movement out there that has websites detailing complex applications w/which to wash hair w/o the dreaded *sulphates*. Ask not; I don’t know what that means.
My beautician has stories of women like this coming in after a year or more of this nonsense. They have lice and the odor is pretty bad, as well. Sometimes the hair has to cut above the dreads because the hair involved is so damaged.
OK now. i use no-poo shampoo and I don’t have dreads. I do have fine curly hair and no-poo keeps it from frizzing.
