WASHINGTON Defense Secretary Leon E. Panetta said Thursday that he and top military commanders felt very strongly that deploying American forces to defend against the fatal attack last month on the United States diplomatic compound in Benghazi, Libya, was too risky because they did not have a clear picture of what was happening on the ground.

Wasn’t it August 28, same month as your observation in europe, that the US Ambassador to Guatamal was assassinated?

Yup ~
DID YOU SEE THE KISS???? (not yelling, just my way of expressing my reaction)
Geraldo ended it by saying “and I love you all” and then KISSED Mr. Woods.
(General Keane gave Geraldo enough cover to sweta at the North Pole)
sweta = sweat (fingers faster than brain tonight)
“We can’t use the military, someone might get hurt.”
That won’t fly with many of the 47%.
Somolia was a “peace-keeping” humanitarian mission. This would have been a RESCUE mission and therefore suitably armed and prepared.
Blackhawk Down is not going to fly.
Iraq was a haven and sanctuary for the terrorists in Afghanistan, treating their wounded and assisting in the fight in many ways. It also had WMDs which were moved into Syria according to top Iraqi Air Force officers.
Saddam had to go.
If you want to blame someone for too small forces, then blame the Democrats who harassed and fought Bush every step of the way and the Treason Media which spread lie after lie supporting the RATs and suppressed information showing Bush was correct.
How many stories in the Treason media were there about the secret nuclear weapons research program which Saddam was running in Libya? NO one knew about this until Kadaffi gave it up (as well as all his WMB programs) after we invaded Iraq.
In point of fact, we needed a different KIND of army in Iraqi, not more of the same. We were not fighting large conventional armies for long.
Interesting tale sounds pretty damn scary, but what does McGovern have to do with it. No one had heard much about him in 68.
Both groups of assassins were kinda/sorta ~ not exactly head-on terrorists of the sort usually found in their respective parts of the world ~ and at least the guys in Guatemala were also for hire if you really needed them because they were not well to do. The idiot militia crowd who did the attack on the embassy in Libya were similar and were run out of town shortly after by another more pro-American militia.
So, what was it the Russians intended to do coincident with the Libya thing that they needed a news cycle distraction for? Note also they had a riot in Cairo that dovetailed into this deal.
The other item that's consistent with the old USSR plan is there's somebody in the chain of command that doesn't get back to the guys on the ground. We were left hanging just sitting on the border watching (from a safe location on the otherside of the hill) for 6 days ~ yet we were the 'tripwire' that called in the deal at 3am ~ and I think all these deals happened at 3am.
Could this same Russian analyst now be working for Iran? They'd want any American gunrunning stopped if those guns were going to rebels in Syria.
That's a possibility since there's been chatter about Obama's crowd negotiating something under the table with the Iranians.
Regarding Russian involvement in whatever it was took place, the parallels with the August 68 event are incredible ~ it's like a military analyst pulled one of his plans out of his portfolio and sold it to a new customer ~ could be Iran ~ but what was it they'd wanted covered up at that time?
That was an explosive August. I believe France also went up in revolt at that time.
Fire on my position, I repeat, Fire on my position. Over.
Thank you for your detailed and informative comment. I spent the day preping for Sandy, and will look at your links while I am rained/blown indoors. I have had some NGO experience. Worked a while for one with multiple Latin Amrican offices. Rumor had it that we were a CIA front, but I never could really tell. This was around 40 years ago. My father was a white collar trade unionist, but spent most of his spare time fighting attempts by Communists to take over his union and the Port of New York right after WWII. He was on the New York Port Council. So I think I have more than the average awareness of how complex things can be.
The situation with Russia is also complex. They have all those former Soviet, Islamic countries on their southern border, so they have to walk a careful line too. I hope that Romney is aware of just how complex that is too, before he does/says something that will increase our problems in that part of the world, and get my son in another war.
Zawhiri is well traveled. A while ago I read he was married to a woman in the tribal areas of north West Pakistan, and was under their protection as a kinsman. Any idea where he is now.
