Destructive Wind Potential - Winds will be strong over a very large area and capable of downing or damaging many trees and possibly blowing out windows in skyscrapers. Power outages are expected to be widespread and could last for days so be sure to charge cell phones and have any other supplies you may need. Wind damage may spread well inland, especially over higher terrain, due to the extremely large size of Sandy.
It’ll be a good blow, but let’s not go crazy. It won’t be as bad as the Blizzard of ‘78, which lasted several days, had hurricane force winds, and was snow—which brings down trees and cuts power more effectively than rain.

A weather expert on Fox was saying that power outages could last 7-10 days, which runs right into election day. Hopefully it will be back by then, but does anyone know what the legal process is in such a scenario if power is not restored by election day in some districts?
I thought I heard Neil Cavuto say that Gov. Bob McDonnell said if worse comes to worse, the election may be delayed a day if power isn’t restored.

Millions of people could evacuate, & once evacuated, it is difficult to return home. Many cities discourage or prohibit returnees until power is restored to major areas. Roads could be clogged or impassable for days. There is really no reason to go home if the power is not restored.
You can't vote if you are 100 miles away from your precinct.
This storm could gut the NE liberal voting block, with low turnouts, especially the poor.
I have no idea how the vote could take place in affected areas, nor when. I do know there will be a big fight over the resolution, rivaling the Bush/Gore legal battle over hanging chads.
Folks here have been speculating on how Obama could stop or rig the election. Well, I'd say Sandy presents him an opportunity.
I doubt people will be evacuating. I’m sure it won’t be THAT big. I am rather optimistic of how this could possibly the early voting and GOTV of the Demonrats, and possible turnout on the 6th.
The only concern I have is whether or not power will be restored to run the voting machines. Like most others on this board, I will crawl over broken glass and hot coals to vote!

Although thinking about it a bit, this IS going to hit the effete and liberal northeast. So I guess there might be a lot of deaths from starvation as people wait for the government to cut the downed trees and deliver food and squirt bottled water into their mouths.

They’re calling for 65+ mph sustained winds where Im at plus a ton of rain. Trees are still full of leaves, so planning on no power for awhile. Who knows whats gonna happen when these two storms merge together, so no I don’t think people can be crazy enough in preparation for it.

A few years ago New Mexico I believe it was had a real bad snow storm the day of the election the outlaying folks just could not get in to vote the town people could so the dims won some extra seats.
And no there was no late voting.
Down South, interstate roads are made one-way only leading away from the coast, making a return home difficult. Mandatory evacuations are not lifted until long after the storm has passed, & city officials strongly discourage people return to affected areas, sometimes with roadblocks.
I agree that storm-inexperienced people in the NE will be unprepared & in great risk.
If the storm follows predictions, there could be chaos for weeks after the storm. The important point they make is that the storm may linger for several days, greatly compounding damage & delaying recovery. Prolonged high winds & soaking rain will cause many more trees to fall, blocking roads & cutting power lines.
