Texas Says No Way, Jose to U.N. Election Monitors

Don't mess with Texas. It's a slogan that not only applies to littering on state roads, but also regarding unwanted interference by the United Nations. Left wing groups have enlisted the U.N. to help monitor American elections, and Texas' attorney general is having no part of it.

As reported on Monday, the U.N. is stepping onto American soil to monitor the upcoming elections with the specific focus of looking for "voter suppression activities by conservative groups."

Here's the report from The Hill:

The Organization for Security and Cooperation in Europe (OSCE), a United Nations partner on democratization and human rights projects, will deploy 44 observers from its human rights office around the country on Election Day to monitor an array of activities, including potential disputes at polling places. It's part of a broader observation mission that will send out an additional 80 to 90 members of parliament from nearly 30 countries.

Liberal-leaning civil rights groups met with representatives from the OSCE this week to raise their fears about what they say are systematic efforts to suppress minority voters likely to vote for President Obama.

The Leadership Conference on Civil and Human Rights, the NAACP and the ACLU, among other groups, warned this month in a letter to Daan Everts, a senior official with OSCE, of "a coordinated political effort to disenfranchise millions of Americans -- particularly traditionally disenfranchised groups like minorities."

The Daily Caller reports that Texas is balking at the idea of U.N. involvement. In a letter sent by Texas Attorney General Greg Abbott, the AG warns that U.N. poll watchers "do not have jurisdiction in the state and will, therefore, be criminally prosecuted if they attempt to interfere at Texas polling locations on Nov. 6."

The letter, addressed to Ambassador Daan Everts, came in response to the announcement that the Organization for Security and Cooperation in Europe will deploy scores of election monitors to the U.S. in an effort to monitor conservative groups for voter suppression or intimidation.

"Groups and individuals from outside the United States are not allowed to influence or interfere with the election process in Texas," wrote Abbot. "This State has robust election laws that were carefully crafted to protect the integrity of our election system.

Abbott also states in his letter that if U.N. members want to learn more about the American election process, Texas will be happy to help them out.

Elections and election observation are regulated by state law. The Texas Election Code governs anyone who participates in Texas elections--including representatives of the OSCE. The OSCE's representatives are not authorized by Texas law to enter a polling place. It may be a criminal offense for OSCE's representatives to maintain a presence within 100 feet of a polling place's entrance. Failure to comply with these requirements could subject the OSCE's representatives to criminal prosecution for violating state law.

The Daily Caller reports that Alabama may also be seeking ways to bar the U.N. monitors.

Bringing the U.N. in for American elections simply because some left-wing groups fear "conservative intimidation" is outrageous. The only thing the U.N. would do is ensure that voter fraud DOES happen.

The UN does not just appoint this BS.

I just got back from early voting. I was in line for over an hour. There were not many who were ashamed to say they were voting ABO. A couple of ladies close to me were saying they did not vote in 2008, because they knew 0 had no chance to take Texas.

I'd say the line had over 100 people in it when I got there and at least that many when I left. Every other year I voted early, there may have been 20 or 30 from the time I got there to the time I left.

Took us 30 minutes in NW Austin where they had 18 booths. We are used to just walking up and voting without waiting.

There is a restriction from talking about the races within 100 feet of the polling places.

Especially since law enforcement in Dallas, Houston, Austin, and San Antonio have come down on the side of gun control and other liberal issues in the recent past.

You'd lose. Politically appointed management has taken that position at times, but never effectively here in Houston.

This IS the town of Joe Horn, who blew away two illegal alien burglars in his front yard and was no-billed.

Would the average police officer arrest a UN busybody ? Under the right circumstances, yes.

We live in the NW area of Travis county and it leans about 75 or 80% Republican. I saw one “Veterans for 0 bummer” sticker in the parking lot. Lots of R/R stickers on the vehicles. I had to walk about 100 yards to the start of the line. Believe me, we here are sick of the current admin and don’t mind saying so in public.
