Pardon my ignorance, but what is that tube thing in front of, and to the lower right, of the scope?
Its laying on the forward hand guard. Looks to have a wire coming out of the back of it.

Really? I’ve read the lacquer coating is what’s corrosive. I just Googled it and Wiki says they don’t use it anymore.
Hope it’s correct because I’d love me some cheap ammo, especially in .308

Yeah, OK. Thats kind of what I thought it might be but I didn't see the piece coming out of the front in that pic. I see the shadow of it now.
All this new technology thats out now, I thought it might have been some lazer red dot thermo boost range finder attachment unit...;)

No. The old style Berdan primers were corrosive.
I don’t even think they are corrosive anymore so long as it is modern ammo.
It was those old potassium fulmate primers for the most part.
