I mostly agree. See my post 79.

However, from the narrative it is not apparent that the tangos knew that the Ambassador and others were in the safe room. They may have though that no one was left in the building and so they torched it.

We just do not know on that score.

If they knew they were in there and wanted to kill them, why not toss a couple of granades in there?

It copuld be they thought the Ambassador had already excaped and sop just burned the building.

On another note.
Watch this video of testimony exchange between the bureaucrats in Washington DC and the lead Security Officers on the ground in Libya. It is simply amazing...and shameful.

The lead security officer in all of Libya for the US Government sums it up be saying, when referring to his Washingto DC support managers whom he had to ask for additiona security that he felt like, “The Taliban is in the building.” Meaning in the US government.

This disaster in Benghazi reminds me in so many ways of the fall of Lima Station 85 in Laos, 1968. All warnings of impending doom ignored by higher-ups. Ambassador Sullivan refused to believe the mile high radar installation in danger of attack/capture. In fact it was attacked...and captured.

Sigonella AFB on Sicily is not that far from Benghazi. During Op Unified Protector (the bombing of Libya by NATO) there were aircraft parked bumper to bumper. Most have returned to their host countries but there are still NATO aircraft there. We have carriers in the Med. Sea. Yet these brave men died alone. Shocking. Disgraceful.

The piece says that they attempted to attack the safe room and could not penetrate it. So they had to know that it was a refuge and somebody was there. Hence, the conclusion that such a redoubt might not house the ambassador would be illogical. The shape of the hallway would have precluded the effectiveness of all but a gas grenade.
