The site has been screwed up since Sept. ‘08 and there doesn't seem to be much interest in getting everything back to the way it was originally.

This thing with the site being near totally unusable during the debate threads seems to be something new. I remember when the TV show '24' threads used to get 1,000 or more posts per episode and the site would hum right along w/o a hiccup.
