I always bear in mind that love of money being the root of evil, camels passing through the eye of a needle, etc. was from a civilization wherein the rich were more likely to have gotten that way from slave driving and hitting people on the head with clubs than running a small business.

The exact statement is that the love of money is “a root of all kinds of evil.” Once you are willing to make moral compromises in order to get wealth, not because you know no other way to survive but because it charms you, then the pits of hell are the limit. And even if you come by wealth honestly, it can be a temptation to keep it by foul means.

I think you are probably wrong..There were many merchants, business people..that didn't gain their wealth while dealing in slaves, and "hitting people".

The LOVE of money is the root of all evil.

Do you really understand the camel passing thru the "eye of the needle" passage?
