Let’s go easy on Candy. She’s closer to a real journalist than most over there, and also, CNN seems to be seriously eyeing the demographic (right-of-center folks) that Fox seems to be abandoning.
He had catchy nicknames for press corps folks and others, too.

I’ve been wondering if Crowley would make a different play here. While I give this only about a 1% chance of happening, if that, she could make herself instantly famous if she chose hard-hitting audience questions for Obama and then went after him with her follow-ups to ensure that he really answered them, or to make it very clear that he wasn’t about to answer them.
Obama’s re-election is in trouble, obviously. The way it stands now he’s in danger of going into a downward spiral where virtually everyone gives up on him except his hardcore base. Tough questioning by Crowley could put an end to his chances of recovering, but doing so would lend instant credibility to CNN and to her as well. lf Obama plunged in the polls immediately following the debate, her questioning would get the credit (or blame).
In other words, she has a chance to be the first American reporter (Univision already tried) to really put our President on the spot and get him to address the many issues he’s managed to duck the past 3 and a half years. If she does this successfully, and his poll numbers plunge, and he eventually loses, she’ll be viewed by many as the equivalent of Woodward and Bernstein when they took down Nixon. Granted, the Left will despise her, but as you said CNN appears to be making a recent play for the mainstream and a move like this by Crowley would make that quite obvious.
Just wondering if any of this has occurred to Crowley or to the powers that be at CNN.
