SIOUX FALLS, S.D. A South Dakota man who beat a prison guard with a pipe and covered his head in plastic wrap to kill him during a failed escape attempt was put to death Monday, in the state's first execution since 2007.
Eric Robert, 50, received a lethal injection and was pronounced dead at the state penitentiary in Sioux Falls at 10:24 p.m. He is the first South Dakota inmate to die under the state's new single-drug lethal injection method, and only the 17th person to be executed in the state or Dakota Territory since 1877.
Robert had no expression on his face. Asked if he had a last statement, Robert said: "In the name of justice and liberty and mercy, I authorize and forgive Warden Douglas Weber to execute me for the crimes. It is done."

SD has lower murder rates than Chicago but it has does have far more lead flying. Of course, it is out in the fields. SD’s very low population density is a good thing. More than 1.5 million pheasants were taken in last year’s season. Last year, more than 10% of SD residents bought licenses along with another 100,000 non-residents. Saturday is the season opener so there will literally be several million shots being fired over the next couple months by upland hunters. Not to mention deer, duck, goose, dove etc happening. Oh, about $10 and a week of processing time (plus a clear background) can get you a concealed carry permit...
East St Louis has over 25 homicides a year alone. Population 27,000.
And I was commenting about the homicide rate.
The numbers total tend to range between 10-30 a year.
What is your source for that?
They have most, if not all states there. My state's rate is over double SD. Thank you Detroit (315 of the 567).
My state, the Peoples' Republik of Kalifonia, had 1,809 in 2010. Most were gang related, probably. Far less than what one would expect for a population of 37 million.
