Codename 'Murky Water': Iran's Secret Plan to Contaminate the Strait of Hormuz
Der Spiegel ^ | 10/15/2012 | Erich Follath (Translated from the German by Christopher Sultan)

Iran could be planning to create a vast oil spill in the Strait of Hormuz, according to a top secret report obtained by Western intelligence officials. The aim of the operation is to both temporarily block the vital shipping channel and to force a suspension of Western sanctions. …

The goal of the plan seems to be that of contaminating the strait so as to temporarily close the important shipping route for international oil tankers, thereby "punishing" the Arab countries that are hostile to Iran and forcing the West to join Iran in a large-scale cleanup operation—one that might require the temporary suspension of sanctions against Tehran. …

That’s ok. When Romney wins and we start drilling our own, we won’t need the Strait. f-— ‘em!

I’m not sure who would hurt most if they did something like that. Probably us and other nations that use the strait.

Suspending the sanctions is kind of pointless if you can’t get through the strait and the sanctions now are pretty much useless anyway since we hand out all kinds of waivers for them.

Most folks don’t know there’s a pipeline that bypasses the straits.

Seems to me that with these advanced SCOOPER ships that can suck up oil out of the water , SPILL AWAY. We can use the free oil.

It’s like piling up dollar bills on your driveway to keep someone out of the garage.

forcing the West to join Iran in a large-scale cleanup operation

In that case, just set the oil on fire. That will clean things up rather nicely.

sorry but unless they are contaminating it with mines, i fail to see how an oil spill stops anything...

OK, Iran ships 80% of its oil through the Straits of Hormuz.

Iran would be the most affected by any obstruction of those Straits.

Iran is crazy, but not stupid.

Iran has anchored about 30 full oil tankers in the Indian Ocean. We know where they are... Without hiring any Somali pirates, we can commandeer them anytime we want.

Iran can talk the talk and that’s all.

yes but it is only about 40% of the capacity that flows through in shipping. and iran’d probably try tyo get that too.

Oh, it’s you again. Got lost on the way to DU?

I cannot take blame for your not understanding what the ecclesiocracy in Iran is about. They truly are mad and they truly do want to bring about the apocalypse. When they get their nukes, we will all see—and that is the true tragedy here.

Would Russia and China be able to get their oil from Iran? Do they get their Iranian oil by ship or do they get it by pipeline?

Europe wouldn’t be about that too much. They are far more dependent upon that oil than we are.

Is this why Barry suspended US drilling in AK to ensure we are in a crisis by election day? No Mid-East oil and no/little domestic oil?

Iran isn’t a big oil producer but I know we gave China a waiver to get around the sanctions so they can buy natural gas from Iran.

Those same Arab companies are funding and supply the "revolution" in Syria, doubt Iran wants them to turn their attention to Iran.
