PIERRE, S.D. (AP) -- Longtime former U.S. Sen. George McGovern, the Democratic presidential candidate who lost to President Richard Nixon in a historic landslide, has moved into hospice care near his home in South Dakota, his family said Monday.
"He's coming to the end of his life," his daughter, Ann McGovern, told The Associated Press.

McGovern admitted when he went into business after he retired from politics how intrusive the government was.
Read the Ambrose book about his World War II career as a pilot...I think it is called Wild Blue...good man...had convictions.
May the country celebrate the life of George McGovern the same way it did in November of 1972.
A decent man and patriot, who labored under some foolish ideas, but came to repent many of them when he went into business after leaving politics. I would rather see him President-for-Life than endure the re-election of Barack Obama.
Just got a piece of junk election mail with his name on it...frankly, I had thought he already had passed away.
For some reason, I am suddenly getting junk email from liberals. McGovern and Schumer are the two biggies that come to mind.
McGovern fought against card check the past several years. He was a member of an older generation of honorable Democrats.
He ran for president exactly 40 years ago.
You can’t live forever, but you can live a long time.
He’s a great example of someone you can profoundly disagree with, yet respect.
I realize this is not his obituary, but I wonder where AP gets off by neglecting this aspect of his accomplishments, even in an article of that size:
“He volunteered for the U.S. Army Air Forces upon the country’s entry into World War II and as a B-24 Liberator pilot flew 35 missions over German-occupied Europe. Among the medals awarded him was a Distinguished Flying Cross for making a hazardous emergency landing of his damaged plane and saving his crew.”
From the Wikipedia entry on McGovern.
That is a problem when you go out and get a real job, you start to realize that even soft-communism of the type the Dims peddle is a forward momentum killer.
I don’t think we will ever have this problem with Jimmy Carter...
Regardless of a huge difference in point of view, prayers to him and his family.
Is he still alive?
I had no idea
Agree 100%.
Married for 64 years before his wife passed in 2007. That’s an impressive number.
McGovern was the first and only democrat I voted for in the ‘72 primary when I was draft bait. By the time of the election I was drafted and pulled the lever for Nixon.
Dick Nixon was a good Cold Warrior but he was as Big Government as the Bush's at home.
0bama probably hopes he kicks at the right time for the dims to reap some sympathy votes.
Poor guy. I seem to recall that he had an alcoholic daughter that froze to death in a snowbank in Madison, WI. He has borne his share of sorrow.
His family had better screen the hospice nurses carefully.
I met him after a Democratic party rally . I waited till they all cleared out and then asked him what plane he flew. We talked for a few minutes and I thanked him for his service. My respect for him out weighed my revulsion over his support of Fidel.
I’m glad he sees the light now
