Because the onus is on the challenger to prove he or she is a better alternative. Anyway, that's the answer you will usually get.

In reality, if the incumbent is a Republican, they are still in the role of the challenger. See Bush in 2004. Conventional wisdom at the time was that he would lose with the large number of undecideds because the undecideds always break for the challenger.

It didn't happen in 2004 for one reason only: Bush was perceived as the challenger because the media were lined up so solidly behind John Kerry.

I can only guess but they are ALL part of this corrupt "Two-Party Cartel". No 3rd party candidates can get traction because they are forced out by this oligarchy.
