Kindergartener Receives 10-Day Suspension for NERF Gun
Theres nothing more innocuous than a NERF (Non-Expanding Recreational Foam) gun right?
Well, not if youre an administrator at Duchesne Elementary School of Ferguson/Florissant School District in Missouri. Apparently, a toy gun that shoots foam-based projectiles presents a clear and present danger to students, faculty and staff.
To clarify, on Monday, school officials meted out a 10-day suspension to a five-year-old who brought his NERF gun to class.
Thats correct. 10 days for a NERF gun.
The principal of the School, Katie Sanders sent a letter home to the parents explaining the reason for the suspension, in it she said, providing a safe environment that allows children to learn is our first priority. Please take this opportunity to remind your children that no weapons of any kind are allowed on school property and encourage them to report unsafe situations.
Therere at least two obvious problems with that statement, (a) the notion that a NERF gun jeopardize the safety of children and (b) the insinuation that a NERF gun is a weapon (Its not a weapon; its a harmless toy).
Though, trying to impart this common sense to politically correct drones is like, well (to use an oldie but a goodie), talking to a brick wall.
Needless to say, the mother was dumbfounded by the entire situation.
"I'm having trouble explaining to my son, who was excited to start school, why he is in so much trouble for a toy that he received as a Christmas gift, Tamoya Smith told Examiner.com in an interview.
In an attempt to contest the punishment, Smith went up the administrative ladder and made an appeal to the Department of Elementary and Secondary Education.

Unfortunately, they won’t protect the five year old from “disadvantaged” children who might beat him up for his money, if he’s in the wrong demographic or they’ve hit their quota for disciplining black hooligans.
I for one am traumatized just by the picture of that semi-automatic high capacity NERF assault gun on FR.
Kid should’ve brought a potato gun. If you’re gonna get suspended, might as well be for something that can take an eye out.
The 10day suspension tells us that this ass-principal understands that there isn’t an ounce of merit to her “feelings”.
Assault Toy!
Many times, Zero Tolerance equals NO BRAINS!
Whoa, a nerf gun! I just hope he didn’t bring any ammo!
Even though my son didn’t get a suspension, his teacher did send home a note with a “knife” from a Legos set (about 3/4” long) tape to it saying, “Please remind your son not to bring weapons to school”. Bureaucrats are crazy insane...
you’d have to leave the entire publik skool system, not just the one skool.
most places could still operate on common sense, even if they were mostly left leaning. now they can’t with the zero-tolerance, we can’t think and use common sense policies.
Every school board member should be informed that if this is allowed to stand, if they do not take action to straighten out this smug “educator” Candice Reese, that the citizenry will work tirelessly for their replacement.
Yeah, you're right. Still, I couldn't send a little kid back after that. It's like the sexual harassment thing that has happened a few times for a 6 year old (whatever age) kissing a girl on the playground. They are terrorizing little children.
Or.... hold onto the toy until the child brings a signed note from the parents stating that they are now aware he brought an ‘outside’ toy to school.
