It was, until 1865. The 1846 abolition of slavery merely redefined slaves as indentured servants serving a "lifetime apprenticeship." Look it up if you don't believe me. It appears New Jersey had slavery and wasn't even honest about it.

And in 1861 the grand total of persons serving their lifetime apprenticeship was 18. All old retainers, whose retention in service was along the lines of a retirement. They could not be sold, they could not be turned out. They could not be pursued if they left.
