FIVE men have been jailed after a sniper rifle was found in the boot of a minicab in South Croydon.

Tyron Harding, 45, sold the .22 bolt-action rifle and hollow-point ammunition - designed to cause maximum injury - to his fellow defendants on November 1 last year.

Armed police officers stopped Loyan Osman, 25, soon afterwards as he travelled along Brighton Road, South Croydon, in a minicab. In his possession he had 57 rounds of ammunition.

When officers searched the boot of the vehicle they found the rifle with a sniper scope and silencer attached. It was loaded with a bullet in the breach and more in a magazine.

Osman, Anthony Hosey, 28, Khadar Mire, 25, and Nathaniel Tracey, 27, had been watched by officers as they travelled from Lambeth in Mire's BMW to buy the weapon and ammunition from Harding.

As Osman travelled back to Lambeth in the minicab his colleagues followed in the BMW.

Officers arrested Osman after stopping the cab and subsequently detained Hosey, More and Tracey following further investigation.

On December 12, officers searched Harding's girlfriend's house in Huddlestone Crescent, Merstham, which was close to the location where the weapon was purchased.

In the loft they found another .22 bolt-action rifle with a telescopic sight and silencer. Three boxes of hollow-point ammunition, containing 62 rounds, were also recovered. Harding was arrested as he returned home.

Detective Sergeant Phil Holt, of the Met's Trident Gang Crime Command, said: "These men were found in possession of the kind of lethal weaponry that is typically associated with the most dangerous of criminals.

Yeah, I did. We got morons on this thread talking about professional hit teams already, so you can forgive me my mistake, won’t you?

Yes, some air rifles are legal in the UK. However there are strictly enforced limits on the power of even the air rifles. It really is pretty low so that what is considered the low end rifle in the US is just barely legal in the UK. The rig described is simply a modest small game/squirrel/garden pest eliminator.

The police description was a little over the top

"Over the top?"

I'd call it criminal.

Re post this article tomorrow evening or late afternoon. Higher traffic then. This needs to be seen as a reminder of what could happen here should we let our guard down along

What does it say about an "ally" that hands out 16 year jail sentences for the same kind of rig we train kids half that age on?

You and I should be 100 yards apart, each of us with a bolt-action .22, scoped for the distance, and loaded with the yellow jacket ammo in the picture above.

I get the first shot.

So you're going to double down on "asinine?"

A bow and arrow can be lethal at a hundred yards too, but you don't see anyone with the sense of a squirrel buying the idea it's a terrorist weapon.

Detective Sergeant Phil Holt, of the Trident Gang Crime Command, said: "These men were found in possession of the kind of lethal weaponry that is typically associated with the most dangerous of criminals.

"Such items are owned solely by those intent on causing serious harm to their planned target or targets, and our officers deserve huge credit for this intervention which followed a skilled and painstaking investigation.

"We can only speculate about the intended recipient of the second rifle found at Harding's home, however, what is clear is that London is far safer with these individuals and weapons off the streets."

They have GOT to be KIDDING!

I guess it never occurred to the brits that if they didn’t have suicidal immigration policies, and an ultra liberal governmnt that coddles every malcontent, that they wouldn’t be running around like scared little girls when a rifle best suited for plinking fat squirrels on a lazy afternoon is found.

Yes, I do.

Then you obviously lack the sense of a squirrel. Do you think with all the treasure muzzies pour into jihad, the best they can do is a pair of .22s?

As far as I'm concerned, this prosecution is a human rights violation!

Reading the police descriptions, it's hard to believe that nation did so much fighting in the past.

The Crimean, Rourke's Drift, The Somme, the disastrous Dardanelles campaign, and all over the place in WWII, India, Burma, Australia (and thereabouts), North Africa, Sicily, mainland Italy, landing on D-Day at Sword Beach, fighting across France and Belgium, then into Germany with U.S. forces...

What happened to these guys? They didn't used to be so afraid. Their men could be brave enough. They proved themselves many times over in the past. NOW they are afraid of .22 bolt action rifles??? Whatever happened to "rule .303"?

At least the Aussies don't freak out over .22 rimfires. I think in Oz one can have a centerfire hunting rifle too? But only bolt action?

I will not willingly turn in any of my own rifles. One way or another, I'll do what I have to, do my part, and fulfill duty. Born free, aim to stay that way.

Those guys don’t look like rabbit hunters. I wonder if they have known connections to a gang or have been in trouble with the law before?

They were armor piercing hollow points. It was a .22 Cal AK47. Their plan was to bring down an Army helicopter. The rifle was fully automatic.

AFAIK, hollow points aren't armor piercing.

Opposite job.

AK47s aren't made in .22.

Their rifle was bolt action.

You pulled an army helicopter out of your @ss, along with everything else you wrote.

A combined 61 years in prison for a .22 rifle? Dear God!

Britain is lost.
