PBS's 'FRONTLINE' interviewed former Barack Obama classmate, Kristen Caldwell. She grew up and attended Punahou School with "Barry" Obama. She recalls how as a young child, Obama alternatively told classmates he was an Indonesian prince or Kenyan royalty.

So yeah, I can picture him as this slightly -- "chubby" is too strong, but rounded, short little guy, Barry Obama. And he told us that his father was an Indonesian king and that he was a prince, and after he finished school he was going to go back, and he would be a ruler in Indonesia. And I absolutely believed him.
I understand that he told his fifth-grade class that he was Kenyan royalty, but I never heard that story until years later. My sister and I remember very clearly that he was an Indonesian prince and that he would be going back there. So there was some reference to where he had come from, and the understanding was his family was there.

My brother-in-law went to Punahou also, but he’s a few years younger than BO. They were there at the same time, though, and my BIL completely doesn’t remember BO on the basketball team. My BIL followed basketball, and supposedly BO was a big hot-shot player (yeah, right).
I worked as a busboy on weekends in college. A fellow busboy who was black and also of college age claimed to be the son of a king and said he would be returning to his country in a few years to be its leader. He never explained why a crown prince was spending his non-college time as a busboy. He was quite full of himself, though it was hard to take his claim too seriously. At the time I didn’t think much about it, but on reflection, it may simply have reflected a deep-seated inferiority complex. He may have gotten his Kenya citizenship in 1971 when birth-name daddy may have been the method he left Indonesia with no lasting ties when his mother and adopted/step father stayed in Indonesia.
Think about it - how does a child leave a country where his parents are? If another birth parent claims them formally.
So regardless of what happened before 1971 in December of 1971. Obama senior and the Dunhams and Soetoros were likely doing a lot of paperwork.
Fast forward to 1981 - the lost year as the WSJ called it. Supposedly Obama was at Columbia. But it is a very foggy period.
In 1981 Odinga attempts a coup on the Kenya government. Fails. Where other parts of the Odinga/Obama family part of the coup attempt?
What if the coup had succeeded? Would ‘King Obama’ been happy with being part of the new Royal Family of Kenya? Maybe not King but a Prince with a cousin as King.
