Romney says won't pursue new abortion laws

(Reuters) - Republican presidential nominee Mitt Romney, in an apparent fresh move toward the political center, said on Tuesday if elected he would not pursue specific legislation targeting abortion.

"There's no legislation with regards to abortion that I'm familiar with that would become part of my agenda," Romney told the Des Moines Register's editorial board during a campaign visit to Van Meter, Iowa.

Romney's comment could be construed as reassuring some women voters who have had reservations about his candidacy. In recent weeks he has taken some steps toward the political center as he tries to attract independent voters before the November 6 election.

Some conservatives would like legislation aimed at limiting abortions, which were legalized in the U.S. Supreme Court's landmark 1973 Roe v. Wade ruling.

Reacting to Romney's comments, President Barack Obama's campaign sharply criticized the Republican, saying he had previously pledged to appoint Supreme Court justices who would overturn Roe v. Wade.

This is the new phase in the media against Romney, just like clockwork.

Misleading headline of the year.

“There’s no legislation with regards to abortion that I’m familiar with that would become part of my agenda,” does not equal “Romney says won’t pursue new abortion laws”

I see no contradiction here.

There is no legislation that is out there at this time.

The Republicans want a Human life ammendment to the constitution, but one is not written and not in line to be voted on. It is very difficult to change the Constitution.

It is much easier to change the SCOTUS.

This is just a fact. At this point there is no bills pertaining to abortion that would be voted much less signed by Romney as president.

“There’s no legislation with regards to abortion that I’m familiar with that would become part of my agenda,”

That’s how I want it, because you aren’t familiar with this issue. Leave abortion legislation to our experts in Congress. No need to get into the weeds on that one. Just focus of fixing the economy, we’ll handle the rest, including ending the money pipeline to Planned Parenthood.

Of course notice this same media has still not made a point about Obama adding, for the very 1st time, a Taxpayer funded abortion on demand up to birth plank to the 2012 Democrat party platform.

The only radical on Abortion in this election is 0bama, a fact very carefully covered up by the Mass Media

Romney is pro abortion. Or, at the very least, not willing to challenge the law that legalizes the killing of babies.

It’s Obama’s support of partial-birth abortion that really horrifies me.

This means nothing, so nobody should freak out and have a cow.

What we NEED to change this issue is a new Supreme Court, and he has pledged a conservative court.

There is no pending legislation in any event that would come before his desk so his comment is EXACTLY accurate.

Smart man. No need to campaign on these issues to distract away from the biggest issue: This abortion of a president.

We need to get a rusty, AIDS-infected clothes hanger to pry him and his ugly wife out of the White House.

Notice also the ABR crowd here wants to ignore that inconvenient fact. At worse Romney will maintain the current status quo, Obama will radically advance the pro Death agenda.

I guess you’re talking about a federal law to override any state laws permitting 3rd trimester abortions.

I would hope Romney would support that, but to get that thru Congress first means we have to take the Senate.

SCOTUS appointments could rid this scourge ultimately, but we have to eat the elephant a bite at a time.

He doesn’t have to. There isn’t much for the government “to pursue” given that Roe is still on the books. All a President Romney needs to do is appoint more Scalia’s and Thomases to the Supreme Court. That’s where abortion laws are decided.

Romney will maintain the current status quo

One of several reasons I will not vote for Romney. All my conscience brain cells would never let be vote for Obama ... so, I will not vote for either.

There is no “law” that legalizes abortion. Roe v. Wade, Doe v. Bolton, etc., are not laws.

Nevertheless, a simple majority in Congress COULD remove abortion from the jurisdiction of the Supreme Court.
