The Austrian skydiver Felix Baumgartner will attempt to become the first human to break the sound barrier unaided by a vehicle.
He is going to jump out of a balloon at more than 120,000ft (36.5km) above Roswell, New Mexico.
In the near vacuum at that altitude, he should accelerate beyond about 690mph (1,110km/h) within 40 seconds.
If all goes well, he will open a parachute near the ground to land softly in the desert, 10 minutes later.

When he hits Max Q, he’ll break up.
Aborted.
The stratos page is saying they have not decided on a new date yet... they are watching the weather -_-
Set to try again in less than 7 hours. Tentative launch set for 0600 MDT (0500 Pacific, 0800 Eastern).
I’m gonna try to get up so I can see when they find out how well gravity works.
Only if he soils himself on the way down. :)
Shouldn’t he be sitting on a motorcycle, a bomb, or somethin’?
HEADS UP: The link is live at this time with video from the launch site. Update will be at 0645 Pacific/0945 Eastern. Currently on a weather hold. Winds have to be calm at the launch site before they can go.
Weather hold extended. Waiting for breezes to die down before inflating the balloon. Possible launch @ 0800 Pacific/1100 Eastern.
Its on the Discovery Channel, until they actually deploy they are showing Mythbusters, last I heard its set to happen at 7:30am PST.
I must have heard it wrong, pushed back until 8am PST, but that is less than 15 minutes from now and the gondola is still on the ground.
On the Red Bull Stratos website, the graphic on the screen shows 7:45 am Pacific for an update, 8:45 for broadcast start....IF the winds cooperate. The shot behind is is a live video of the capsule (Felix is inside).
They JUST made the decision to inflate the balloon. I guess Robert Haggar (formerly of NBC News) is the announcer.
They’re now moving the crane with the capsule, assuming to get it a little closer to the balloon.
On-screen graphic now shows 0815 Pacific as next update, and 0845 as broadcast start time.
