Despite disapproval of Romney's faith, many evangelicals say that won't affect their vote

Chattanooga-area evangelical church pastors may believe the Mormon faith is a cult and may not consider Gov. Mitt Romney a Christian, but they said that won't stop them from considering a vote for him in next month's presidential election.

More than eight in 10 voters in a Pew Forum poll this summer said they were comfortable with the Republican nominee's faith or it didn't matter to them. Nineteen percent said they were uncomfortable with his faith.

"We are electing a president, not a pastor," said Tim Shoap, co-pastor of Signal Mountain Bible Church. "I want the best and most effective leader we can get, [one] who will represent the interests of the people and the country in keeping with the original intent of the Constitution. For me, that makes the Mormon issue largely irrelevant."

While members of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints consider themselves Christians, several local evangelical pastors do not.

"Mormonism is a cult," said Jeremy Roberts, pastor of Highland Park Baptist Church. "Mormons are polytheistic universalists who deny that Jesus is the eternal son of God."

However, he said he would base his vote on "policy, leadership skills and who I perceive will most likely lead the country in the direction I believe is best."

And, you’ll never find a post from me supporting Mitt Romney or the Republican Party as currently instituted. Well, maybe a few months ago I was more supportive of the GOP in general, but not so anymore. So, not sure what ‘secret’ identity you are claiming I am hiding. Nothing I have said contradicts anything else I’ve ever said. It’s just that you insist that, since you are a party shill, that I must be a party shill too.

Every time these threads degenerate like this, it always revolves around one individual making a prolonged character attack and investigation on someone else. And guess what? It’s never the conservatives who launch this, but the GOPe MittBots who demand party loyalty.

I know. I am tired of the folks who are busy screaming that allis lost; everyone is the same; the end is here, the end is here. That may be what they are taught but my pastor teaches from the Bible. That book requires me to be responsible for my day to day existence, to rely on God for those things which I cannot do for myself, to be a responsible citizen and a good neighbor. Too many of them have sold out, and none of them have offered a plan that is better than Paul Ryan’s gimmicky plan from earlier in the year. If you’ve actually looked at it, all he does is move money from Medicare into different places. The actual amount of spending “cuts” is minor, and he bases the idea that we’ll be balanced in 2030 (or 40) on the assumption of 5 percent growth per year and 2 point something percent unemployment. I think I might have even repeated this earlier in this thread, or maybe not. It’s a gimmick. Paul Ryan was chosen because he is a fraud, as the Republican party has embraced comfortable nice “growth” out of debt, instead of taking the real painful actions that are necessary to cut it. Meanwhile, Europe is already burning, and once they go, we’ll be next. The party is bereft of leadership, as the “leaders” they have embraced are just soulless politicians who only care about getting elected, and thus only say whatever they think will get them elected. I say, I’m not going to close my eyes to this just because it upsets some people who demand Group-Think. Oh, and THEN we have the added benefit of aiding and abetting a known religious cult, which will probably benefit a whole lot more than any of the “conservatives” who sold their souls to the lying, conniving party leadership.

I’m of the opinion it’s time to start purging Republicans in general, except for the most conservative, based on one simple standard: Did they endorse Mitt Romney? Until we root out these GOPe scumbags and go-along to get along bozos, our fate will only ever be swapping back and forth between pathological lying Statists who push the same agenda when in office.

That said, it’s probably already too late to avoid an economic collapse, and so all of this is just hot air dissipating into the wind.

I am amused and amazed at the insistence of Romney supports to attempt to make those who do not support him, into something subhuman, or ignorant or liars or deranged or a whole myriad of things.

The ABO is an understandable point of view, one in which I do not share, and not for a single reason.

Personally, I have yet to hear a reason to dismiss Romney's record and vote for him or a reason to vote for him other than ABO.
