Police Fatally Shoot an Unarmed Driver on the Grand Central Parkway (National Guardsman)
NY Times ^ | October 4, 2012 | J. David Goodman and Wendy Ruderman

A New York police detective shot and killed an unarmed man, whose hands, a witness said, were on the steering wheel of his Honda, after he had been pulled over early Thursday for cutting off two police trucks on the Grand Central Parkway in Queens, the authorities said.

...The shooting, which occurred at 5:15 a.m., was the latest in a series of episodes in which police officers fatally shot or wounded civilians.

..A passenger in Mr. Polanco’s car, Diane Deferrari, said in a phone interview Thursday night that just before pulling the car over, officers appeared irate that Mr. Polanco had cut them off. She said that one of the officers — but not Detective Hamdy — stuck up his middle finger and was screaming obscenities from one of the moving police trucks.

“As soon as we stopped — they were rushing the car,” Ms. Deferrari said. “It was like an army.”

She said a group of officers swarmed the car, yelling for the three people in Mr. Polanco’s car to put their hands up. Mr. Polanco, whose hands were still on the steering wheel, had no time to comply, Ms. Deferrari said. At that instant, a shot rang out, and Mr. Polanco gasped for air, she said.

bloomers will never do that. his liberal compartmentalization will make him say “They need guns because the criminals are armed.” he doesn’t give a sh1t unarmed civilians are terrorized by the same armed criminals, because his city doesn’t have to pay medical bills, disability and death benefits to dead and injured civilian’s families.

I was personally involved with a traffic incident in which an off-duty state trooper says I cut him off. He chased me for about 10 miles, stopping when I did, following when I proceeded, and passing against the double yellow line to keep up with me as I tried to intervening vehicles between us (I had no way to know he was an LEO. I dialed 911 to ask for assistance in where to drive to be safe from a potential attacker.

But he was on the phone with his buddies, and 4 cars came for me. They took my statement before revealing that I was the suspect, and not the good citizen as I had imagined.

They charged me with reckless driving, and the cop with nothing. It cost me $1500 for a lawyer to make it go away (the DA said she wasn’t going to put the cop through this.)

I couldn’t report it, because they would have had to reinstated the dismissed charge to defend the cop against my misconduct charge.

I tend to think virtually all cops have moral or mental problems, or are knowingly tolerant of those cops who do.

That’s why I left working in Midtown 24yrs ago, and never went back. It was a liberal sewer and lawless hellhole, in the pre-Giuliani years.

NY Daily is reporting the police car was unmarked.

... said the shooting occurred after the cops in an unmarked car chased them when Polanco tried to maneuver around slow-moving traffic.

How do you put your hands up in a car???

If his hands were on the steering wheel, what more was the driver supposed to do???

Since time immemorial car drivers are told to keep their hands on the steering wheel when stopped so that the police can see them.

“Bet this goes down as accidental discharge.”
I agree. Either it is murder or an accident. I think murder would be hard to prove unless the officer knew the guy or was a member of al-Qaeda.

Why did the cop have his finger on the trigger if he didn’t intend to shoot? Everyone, even minimally trained to use handguns is taught that you don’t put your finger on the trigger until you are ready to shoot. If it was unintentional, then it should be negligent homicide.

I think they were all justifiable.

Yes, gunning down innocent civilians at the Empire State building for the fun of it was clearly justified. The cops needed the entertainment.

Like why even have a gun drawn in the 1st place. Is that SOP for a traffic stop

Good Question.

It must be why the police union officials were "perplexed by the shooting on the parkway" and are going to have to dance through hoops to explain this away.

Agreed 100%. When I was a kid we were in awe of police officers and their ‘to protect and serve’ (the people) mottos on their cars.. Cops have been transformed by unions ‘to protect and serve’ (THEIR GOV’T) now.

“I felt threatened.” Now pick up your 3 week paid vacation as a reward for you heroism in the line of duty.

Police departments have been asking to be stripped of their guns for a long time by training for triggerhappy. The answer may be to promote widespread trained CCW and disarm the police.

"Police sources identified the officer in Polanco’s car as 29-year-old Vanessa Rodriguez. She was waving her police ID out the window just before the shooting, sources said."

and the police in this unmarked car were upset that their unmarked car was cut off.

Why did the cop have his finger on the trigger if he didn’t intend to shoot?

Because he DID intent to shoot. Unlike you or me he will face no serious consequences for his actions. The odds of any criminal prosecution for this blatantly criminal act are basically nill, and any civil action will be born by the NYC taxpayers.

1st degree in NY only counts if a cop gets killed. Reg’lar citizens don’t count as much.
