You would think a President who’s been nothing but an unmitigated disaster his entire term in addition to being a complete jabbering moron the other night in the debates would be trailing by 5, 10, 15 points

Here are some of the problems getting voters to kick out an incumbent. Think about it in different terms. Lets say you bought a new car three years ago and you were so excited about this new car you bragged to all your friends about the car.

It was a car that would pay off all your debt, it would give you money, it would take care of all your health needs. Never has there ever been a car like this. You were so excited you got your friends to buy the same car. You even went on record to those doubters who tried to tell you that this car was all a mirage.

You were very wrong about the car. It was the biggest lemon ever but you don't really want to admit that to yourself. You wrestle with the question "Am I really this gullible?" If you do give up on your car and sell it, you have to face the friends you misled as well as the folks who are going to say "I told you so".

If that car is continually breaking down on your commute to work, your trips to the store or the local government cheese warehouse and is always in the garage because it cannot do ANY of the little things a good car does, then it is time to trade it in for the Romneymobile: looks good, runs good and kicks ass and takes names.

Cognitive dissonance. It is a real effect. But while it may be active at the verbal level, it may not contribute to the motivation needed to go out and act on it. So this factor may influence verbal behavior but not translate into overt voting behavior. We'll see.
