In May 2001, Village Voice columnist Michael Musto said that Sullivan had anonymously posted advertisements for bareback sex (anal sex without a condom) on America Online and the now-defunct website barebackcity.com.

Musto and the entire openly gay community (whatever that is) hated Sullivan because during that period Sullivan was a very conservative Catholic and was very public about his contempt for "militant queers" and leftists.

He was savagely attacked on panels and in the press for his conservatism and lost his job as editor of The New Republic. I was a big fan of his during that time, but he has come around to the traditional gay hater-of-anything-Republican stance.
