Mitt Romney suggests cutting mortgage interest deduction on eve of presidential debate
News Day ^ | October 2, 2012 | THE ASSOCIATED PRESS

In an interview Monday night with Denver TV station KDVR, Romney said, "As an option you could say everybody's going to get up to a $17,000 deduction. And you could use your charitable deduction, your home mortgage deduction, or others — your health care deduction, and you can fill that bucket, if you will, that $17,000 bucket that way. And higher income people might have a lower number."

A Romney adviser said changes in other areas — a taxpayer's personal exemption and the deduction or credit for health care — would also be taken into account if deductions were limited as Romney suggested. Combining changes to those two areas with the limit on deductions would maintain Romney's goal of keeping tax burdens the same for wealthy and middle income taxpayers, the adviser said.

I don't think eliminating or capping the mortgage interest deduction will kill the housing market. Seems to me taxpayers should not be expected to subsidize the neighbor wanting to live in the most expensive house on the block.

Any hit piece will do when you are desperate. Mitt could remain silent and get blamed for inciting something. This close to the election. Not one one word of attack is likely to have any more than a casual brush with the truth. It seems that the people responsible for interpreting harm from statements drawn from context in a Mitt speech see no harm in the pattern of deeds from Obama.

It’s not just about what you pay or I pay, it’s about what our kids will be stuck with. Mortgage interest will surely head back toward 13% as inflation takes hold... Jimmuh redux.

Maybe it's time for that neighbor to join me in supporting Tom Hoefling.

No one who was planning to vote for Romney is going to change their vote because of this distant possibility, but it could convince some undecideds-leaning-toward-Obama that Romney is in favor of hurting those who are rich enough to own houses—Yayyy!

Exactly. Cain had a much better plan, but sadly the RINO train insisted on Romney. :(

I have to laugh.

According to FR, the Obama video showing him in full Rev Wright mode which has been repeatably broadcast on the largest Cable network tonight is a big nothing but this article from a no where website is going to cost Romney votes

Let face it, a certain number of you will condemn anything Romney does.

Romney’s been getting pounded for not being “specific” in what he would eliminate in cutting taxes by lowering rates but still maintaining government income - this both gives some specifics and also by limiting it for high earners takes the “tax cuts for the rich” argument away - clever.......

For a lot of us, it's not news that Obama is a racist. His entire campaign has from the beginning been based upon creating divisiveness and antagonism between groups.

15% of normally GOP voter, and a whole lot of old school Democrats, thought they were voting for a “Uniter not a divider” in 2008. We knew it was BS, they did not.

“Back at him, how ‘bout for two years we make credit card interest deductible like it used to be?”

ANYONE STUPID ENOUGH TO PAY INTEREST ON A CREDIT CARD SHOULDN’T BE ALLOWED TO DEDUCT IT!!!

The shocking part to me was how he sucked up to that black Christian congregation. He knew just the right notes to hit. To someone familiar with him in 2012 mode, it shows him as a fraud. A lot of people in those churches are living through the heartbreak of having a spouse or a son or other relative in prison, so he made sure he hit that note. Just for one example.

If you know the 2012 Obama and you know black churches, the charade is obvious. To me that was the most damaging thing about the video.

I know, I’m on the wrong thread. . . .

You eventually spend every dollar you make — or else you lose it somehow. It’s not useful as wall decoration.

Under the current tax system, you got taxed when you earned it. If you then replace part or all of the income tax with a sales tax, those people who have money in the bank that was already taxed will now pay tax again when they spend that same money. To be fair, you have to have some way to deduct from the 9% sales tax money that is spent from current savings. Unfortunately, that would be a complicated task (it can be done — do a one-time survey of people’s life savings, and then allow them that much deduction on their income taxes, spread out over the years like the cap on capital losses).

exactly.. the government shouldn’t subsidize anyone’s mortgage.. keeping tax rates low should more than make up the difference in the long run.. I mean isn’t this what we Conservatives are all about? (keep our taxes low and then get government out of our way as we will pay for our own choices

Obama agrees with you.

I do pay my mortgage. However, I am now of the view that I need to dump the house, exit the real estate market entirely and move to the country, and await the complete economic meltdown which will probably be in mid-next year, with or without Obama. Best to sell the house and put the equity in metals. And I do not mean gold or silver.

The next admin, obama or not, will do away with all deductions. They have to.

Unfortunately, its over. I hope to be free in the new republic when it is created.

Frankly we should just scrap the whole corrupt failure that is the US Tax code

It is corrupt because the corruption is what keeps the politicians in power.

Our tax codes make us uncompetitive in international sales. That alone causes the loss of several million jobs.

Due to the tax code business and individuals plan their expenditures and hiring practices based on the effect of the tax code. More millions of jobs are lost again.

If the far left wins the ultimate battle they will use the tax code to beat us into submission.

Yes, and that really worked out for us, didn't it!
