Question: Why does the "Free Obama Phone" have to be a cell phone? Why couldn't it be a free landline phone? Much cheaper for those of us paying for it. No features, including long distance, needed as the "free" phone is being marketed as a way to make "emergency communications." You don't need call waiting, caller ID, etc. if you're just calling your neighbor or 911.
FWIW, I do not have a cell phone and probably never will.

Any cellphone will call 911 without a contract. Emergency calls is just a smokescreen. If you spend 250 minutes on 911 calls a month you probably ought to think about going to a safer neighborhood.

If you have a land line, you are paying for free phones for others.
This was started by Bush for poor rural people for 911 calls only
but I think they changed it because people might want to call someone else for an emergency. So they get to call anyone, anytime I guess.
