My mom grew up on a farm and I can remember going with my granny to “slop” the hogs. She had a 5 gallon bucket kept right outside the kitchen and everything discarded from cooking went in there ... potato peels as one good example. She would then add some milk from the dairy cows and give it to the hogs. She just leaned over the fence and poured it into the trough.

I asked mom if her folks ever warned her about the hogs and she said ‘no’. I then asked her if she ever fed the hogs ... different reaction ... “oh NO, we never were allowed to do anything with the hogs!” She didn’t know why, but I suspect it was because my grandparents knew they were dangerous. On a side note, Granddad made some great sausage!!
