Current drug tests detect any marijuana use within the past 30 days; how much does the joint you shared three weekends ago have to do with your ability to do a job today?

It sounds like that joint from three weeks ago has to do with whether or not a person is hired.

If it has nothing to do with your ability to do a job, why does it have anything to do with whether or not you're hired?

It has to do with RISK.

Companies get sued all the time. If there is someone on the payroll who has a history of drug use, and if the plaintiff finds out about them, then the company is automatically at fault because the employee “could have” caused the issue with the defective product / service. It sucks but that is the way the modern legal battle shapes up.

Further, if the company KNEW or should have known about the employee’s drug use, then there is the possibility of triple damages. It is a lot less expensive to simply not hire someone in the first place.

I'd say it is because marijuana is an illegal substance and employers don't want to hire someone who smokes illegal substances. Business owners can be funny like that.
