AFP - A theatre in southern Russia has stopped selling tickets to the musical "Jesus Christ Superstar" after prosecutors launched a probe into whether it is offensive to devout Christians, officials said Saturday.
Saint Petersburg's Rock Opera company was to perform the Andrew Lloyd Webber musical -- a 1970s classic that has been regularly performed in Russia -- at the Philharmonic in the southern city of Rostov-on-Don on October 18.
However prosecutors launched a probe after a group of local residents complained that the musical presented a distorted image of Jesus Christ.
"A probe is under way, and subsequently the appropriate decision will be taken," a spokesperson for the Rostov prosecutors told the Interfax news agency....

"But we preach Christ crucified, unto the Jews indeed a stumbling block, and unto the Gentiles foolishness: But unto them that are called, both Jews and Greeks, Christ the power of God, and the wisdom of God." 1 Corinthians 1:23-24

Having your head in your dirt chute renders you acutely myopic.
You’re everything wrong in one convenient package. Lewd, sexual references. Scatalogical if I’m not mistaken. Go on.
I’m tired of dirtbags like you on freerepublic. Who dragged you out of a 13’th century stone fortification to tell us how to interpret the gospels or anything else?
Our local theater company put on a hideous production of it with Christ as a Black with dreadlocks, and the rest of the cast were all street bums. It was horrid and we cancelled out annual theater subscription and haven’t been back since.
People were walking out soon after it started. (We did too.)
Roger that. JCS is how I learned the Gospel story. My family was not religious and I was not taught the Gospel as a child. The music (and music is a part of virtually ever Christian church service) is excellent and the lyrics are true to scripture. I have no idea why any one would consider it anti-Christian. It was an awesome evangelistic work and I am proof of that.
For myself, i liked the album. It’s no more offensive that the old passion plays that the church used to support.
The movie, however, is an affront to anyone who appreciates acting, singing, photography or any other aspect of the art of film making. On the other hand, it wasn’t as bad as Tommy or Hair. Hollywood just doesn’t know how to do rock.
In my opinion, of course.
Russians concerned with “offending Christians”...while the US govt is basically committing genocide against them?
First “Womens Reproductive Organ Riot” is jailed for trashing Christianity....and now this....gosh Russian sure like Christians better than the US govt
I hate to say this but we do have a thing called FREE SPEECH!!!! What do you think about the Book of Mormon??
I agree. Russian theatre shelves are DISGUSTING!
'Jesus Christ Superstar'
What of it? Fine musical.
Idiot. I said it’s offensive, I never said I would censor it.
I have nothing to redeem. Regarding something as offensive but being for free speech are perfectly fine and non-conflicting positions to have.
Finding something offensive doesn’t necessarily mean it must be censored. That may be an assumption others make, but I don’t.
Thanks for missing the point. You really added to the conversation by doing so.
You will spend eternity dusting Russian theater shelves.
lol
