Palm Beach County School District officials think they may have found a better path to students’ grades — through their stomachs.

Officials said this week that through creative funding, beginning Monday morning the district will make sure all its roughly 175,000 students are offered a free breakfast, and in the process, a chance to perform better in class.

The bold policy move is growing among larger school districts around the country as officials look to improve test scores. It essentially expands use of the federal free and reduced lunch program without taking substantially more money from the district.

“I think it’s awesome,” said School Board Vice Chairwoman Debra Robinson. “Kids will always be able to focus better if their belly is content.”

People keep getting more and more things done by big brother...what happens when big brother isn’t there anymore?

We do this here. A fraction of the kids show up. The “needy” kids ride the bus so they don’t arrive in time to eat. It’s mostly the kids of working mothers who have to go to work at 7.

You sound like you don't mind. Maybe we should pay for their dinners too...for those parents who have to work till 5 or 6...

PS. I don't care if the mothers work 24-7..feed your own damn kids.

The whole entire system will collapse. And it won't be pretty.

The district’s $96 million Food Services program is almost entirely funded by state and federal grants and not general fund sources such as property tax revenue. The USDA gives schools at least $1.55 for every breakfast served to a low-income student who qualifies for free lunch.

District officials have a plan to pay for free breakfasts for all students without using any additional district money. They hope to enough new low-income students who are not eating breakfast at school now, and use the additional federal funding to cover the revenue lost by not charging other students for breakfast, Monbleau said.

Well, sure, Palm Beach officials just pick money off that Federal Money Tree.... it's "government" money, so it's FREE, right???

Why the hell is anyone else in the country paying for breakfast for kids in Palm Beach???

When I was in grade school in the 1950s we ate breakfast at home. Of course that was in farm country in rural Indiana. Too bad modern parents can’t feed (or can be bothered to feed if someone else will do it for them) their own children breakfast before school.

Yes.

Shut down the EBT card for one day and see what happens.

Make Big Momma Welfare Queen have to use her food stamps for actual breakfast food instead of Newports and forties and see what happens.

By the way, will their welfare food stamps be adjusted accordingly- seems that out of the approximately 90 meals per child per month that should come out of food stamps, the state will pay for 20 (5 breakfasts a day x 4 weeks) which means a what, 25% reduction in food costs?

Mooch!!! You gonna address that for all the fat kids who will be getting Oreos, Hohos and Fanta Orange drinks with their left over breakfast food stamp money?

Put food out for the cats and they will begin to think of your house as home.

I live in this district, with children attending district schools, and I find this absolutely appalling. Why indeed should federal taxpayers be funding this? Why should any taxpayers be funding this? It’s too much to ask for parents to give their kids a bowl of cereal in the morning? Ridiculous!

Not at all. Palm Beach, Boca Raton, and Wellington are the only 3 cities in PBC with wealth. The rest is a liberal hell-hole of 47%-ers and NY/NJ transplants.

The whole entire system will collapse. And it won't be pretty.

That is precisely the plan.

It's basic Marxist dogma that you must first create large-scale chaos, then sell/force Socialism to "solve the problem." Since the incremental Socialism we've experienced for decades is happening too slowly for their tastes, they're going for the "burn it down" approach to grab power more quickly. I suspect that someone saw the demographic writing on the wall. Lefties don't reproduce very well, what with all the abortion, homosexuality and generally hedonistic lifestyles that don't accomodate annoyances like children very well. To counter such a trend, the Socialists clearly feel the need to pick up the pace and get on with the power-grabbing before they're too weak in numbers.

I know it’s the plan, and I also know that nothing is being done to stop or reverse it.

I am a middle class single mother, and a working mother, and what drives me nuts is that people like me are not asking for this free stuff from public schools, even though we end up benefiting from it. My son gets free breakfast at his public school every day. That's paid for by the PTA for kids like me son who don't qualify for free breakfast. So far, that's fine. If PTAs want to pick up the tab, the taxpayer won't. However, at my son's public school, the lunches of even the kids who don't qualify for free lunch are subsidized. In NYC, the parents pay about $1 per lunch. This is the price for kids who don't qualify for free or reduced price lunch. However, that is about HALF the actual cost of the lunch. So, the taxpayer eats the difference even for kids who are by no definition “poor”. Here I am, willing to pay the full price, yet I get an automatic 50% reduction in actual cost. This is the way liberals steal middle class voters from the Republican party: by giving them free stuff and getting them hooked on Big Brother.
