According to other reporting, the guy was tied to a financier of Islamic terrorism then when arrested became cooperative with federal officials to entrap his benefactors.
If all of that is true, then he may be a fed plant acting in concert with Islamists, and the controversy surrounding the “Innocence of Muslims” film is one big set-up against the 1st Amendment (the same way the “Fast and Furios” scheme was a means to manufacture a crisis to take out the 2nd Amendment).

That was my guess from the start.
For the false flag op of a dozen or so simultaneous 9/11 anniversery attacks, it provides: a casus belli for the mohamedans, cover for the administration on their tacit approval of the attacks (it allowed the treasonpress to avoid pressing the administration about lack of preparedness), a distraction for zero’s campaign and red meat for the newworldorderpress BlameAmerica campaign. It also opens up a case to chip away at the first amendment.
