This race has turned into a circular firing squad among conservatives, as just a look at the comments on this thread will confirm. The fallout from Akin’s untoward remark was that he lost much needed support from groups who are not conservative, but who don’t like McCaskill and can be persuaded to vote Republican. These groups are essential to any election win in Missouri. Akin has lost these groups and will not get them back. So, even if he regains the support of conservatives, which he will, he is in a losing position.

The RNC and NRSC are acting rationally in this case, something quite rare for them. The have limited funds (for good reason, many including myself have not donated to them for years) and can’t afford to waste money on losing efforts. They also understand that this dust up could have an effect on other ballots if they publicly support Akin. He’s on his own because of his own actions, and unfortunately his behavior will deliver this seat to the Democrats. The war between RINOs and conservatives is not helping the conservative cause, you don’t see this among the Democrats who have a much more fragmented and divided electorate because they understand that winning is the important thing. Too many conservatives don’t seem very concerned about winning, they just want to poke a stick in the eye of any Republican they deem unworthy. That’s a good way to become permanent losers in a country that has a conservative majority.
