Cincinnati, Ohio (CNN) Devoted Green Bay Packers fan Rep. Paul Ryan weighed in on the stunning referee call during Monday night's Packers-Seattle Seahawks football game Tuesday. The GOP vice presidential nominee likened the replacement referees to bad calls made by President Barack Obama.
"Did you guys watch that Packers game last night? I mean, give me a break. It is time to get the real refs," Ryan said Tuesday at a town hall in Ohio. "And you know what, it reminds me of President Obama and the economy. If you can't get it right, it's time to get out."

The NFL has become like America under the Obama Administration. A small group of people do the difficult and dangerous work that creates value. A great number of people profit off the honest effort of these few. The people in charge of enforcing the rules are incompetent and unfair and no one tries to correct the situation. The productive people are prevented from speaking honestly about the situation. The media fawns over the people in charge. The media don't tell the truth.

Good analysis on your part, detective. Ryan tells it like it is.

He’s making an analogy, and it’s a good one.
If the people you hired to do a job can’t do the job, you need to fire them and hire someone that can get the job done.
The replacement refs can’t do the job. The NFL needs to get rid of them and hire people that get the job done.
Obama can’t do the job. We need to fire him and hire someone that can get the job done.
Lumping Obama in with the replacement refs—as people that have been hired to do a job and are failing miserably—is a good analogy.

We’re not talking about publicly funded unions. The NFL is a private business and the refs, while unionized, cannot be compared to a union where the taxpayers are on the hook for raises/pensions/benefits.

Ryan said nothing about caving into the unions. He simply stated we need to find referees that can do the job.
For example, when Reagan fired the air traffic controllers, replacements were hired that could actually do the job.

So, we are now going to cave into the unions we have been bad mouthing for years?
Usually, when an industrial union strikes, and replacement workers or management comes in, quality doesn't suffer. It sometimes even improves.
There is nothing against free enterprise for referees to decide as a group to go on strike. There is nothing to stop the NFL from showing that they are as replaceable as anybody else . . .
except that this real life experience shows that they aren't.
Putting together a professional football league in the modern era requires a certain level of athlete, coaching, facilities, equipment, and officiating. Of these, the officiating is the second or third most important element.
The drop-off in performance has been so marked, that the refs have shown that they are not so easily replaced, and that their worth might be worth more than the .175% of profits or so that the NFL uses on the human element of maintaining the integrity of the games.
That is not "caving into the unions". That is realizing that the refs skills and experience is worth more than you have been paying him, because it will cost you more if he decides to leave the profession.
