G. Gordon Liddy, who did some jail time in the aftermath of Watergate, wrote a book in which he discussed a prostitution ring operating out of the burglarized DNC headquarters. John Dean was apparently heavily involved romantically with one of those women, and the impetus for the break-in, according to Liddy, was to destroy evidence of that relationship, which, if it were ever to be made public, would be a major election year scandal that the Nixon White House was trying to avoid. Dean later sued Liddy for defamation in connection with Liddy's Watergate theory and the case was dismissed.
