After Foisting Romney on Base, GOP Elites Now Start to Gripe
realclearpolitics.com ^ | September 24, 2012 | Benjamin Domenech

One of the most interesting aspects of the 2012 election is how the tea party movement has proven more politically mature than the center-right’s self-styled elites, and those who spent much of the Republican primary season chiding swathes of people for being insufficiently pragmatic have turned out to be far more childish than the conservative base.

For the past several weeks, Mitt Romney has been surrounded by critics from the DC-Manhattan elite who’ve denounced him for a lackluster, unfocused campaign, teeing off on Team Romney in the wake of the 47 percent comments for a number of issues—but mostly, in my read, from failing to take their advice. Romney’s defenders, meanwhile, have been many of the same individuals who spent the primary season torching him in effigy as the encapsulation of everything they hate about the Republican ruling class. For months the elites bashed the base for failing to suck it up and see the big picture, to line up for Romney and come on in for the big win. But they got their wish!

The tea party movement—once again proving its pragmatism once the general election season rolls around—lined up in the immediate aftermath of the Paul Ryan pick and has proven they can grow up. Professional concern troll David Frum, who spent most of the primary season telling liberals why conservatives were never going to suck it up and go for Romney, now seems very concerned that they have. Michelle Malkin, who could be taking the wood to Romney on a daily basis for his infidelity to the immigration hardline, has morphed into a loyal soldier while Peggy Noonan is calling for Romney to bring in the 82-year-old Jim Baker to rescue his campaign (yes, really). Ann Romney seems a bit perturbed about this.

The roles of all...

What if Romney wins?

Just saying. Still seems as likely as not.

Though the longer Romney avoids putting Ryan out front, the tougher it gets.

Put Ryan out front. At least 50% of the time.

Romney was certainly my last choice among the candidates/ As a earlier post said, he was foisted on us and now it’s his to lose for being a bad candidate

W has Ralph Nader to thank for having become President. To enough voters in several states, algore just wasn't “progressive” enough for them. Will Virgil Goode,or some other brain dead clown, prove to be Osama Obama’s salvation in two states...or even *one* state?

I think votes for third parties will be few and far between this year. It's a luxury that you can throw away in good times. These are not good times. Romney will get the ABO vote big time, IMHO.

One gets the feeling that the GOP-e care more about destroying the conservative wing of the party than winning the election.

It’s not just a feeling and the only reason they hate conservatives is that conservatives stand in the way of their destroying America.

“Had voters been able to express their preferences as a ranked list of candidates, Romney would have been near the bottom for majority of people.”

I don’t know if a “ranking vote” can be relieved upon...but I do agree strongly with you sentiment. Personally, I would like to see mandatory runoffs if no candidate gets at least a true 50%. Pick the top two and let them square off in each state primary. Speaking of which...I would like to see ONLY primaries (no caucasuses) and only closed primaries. IF you are registered a Republican, you shouldn’t be voting in a Republican primary. Make folks chose a party, or to stay home primary elections.

One thing I hate about Missouri (where I now reside) is that they have open primaries. We didn’t do that nonsense in my home of Oklahoma. When I was young, I used to be “Independent” because I didn’t really understand the differences between the parties (yes I was ignorant). I never, and rightly so, got to vote in a primary. It wasn’t until my later 30s that I became politically aware and registered GOP so I could vote on State offices.

Interestingly enough, I always voted for the GOP presidential candidate starting with Gerald Ford in 1976. This will be the first year I will not vote GOP, because I cannot vote or Romney anymore than Obama. My conscience and convictions won’t let me support the magic mormon. Of course I would NEVER support the Obamanation.

This is why I don't buy that the GOP elites are upset with Romney. They wanted a liberal Republican to go after a liberal Democrat, and they spent a lot of money helping defeat the more Conservative candidates.

They can pretend to be upset with Romney, but they damn sure would have been upset with an actual Conservative.

Was any more conservative candidate denied the opportunity to run?

Don't even go there, bub.

Next for GOP leaders: Stopping Sarah Palin

Screw Romney and the GOP-E he rode in on...

No what is happening is the real conservative bench is lining up for 2016.

Romney will be plastered by the media. We’re already seeing what will happen to Romney. He won’t have a second term.

The real contest is for 2016.

Hillary and someone. Vs. some RINO establishment hero. Vs. Palin.

:D

Now that done, he’s sidelined his own winning VP.

Heh...that was the plan all along. You didn't actually believe that they would let Ryan "go rogue" did you?

I think we should all bombard the RNC with how fed up we are with the GOPers. I’m sick of listening to their whinny BS. It only adds to the demoralization of what we are up against.

I am getting a feeling that those Ryan 2016 posts will be popping up here in January(if Romney loses) much like the Palin 2012 threads popped up 4 years earlier.

I strongly doubt it. Ryan is generating none of the intensity of feeling among Conservatives that Palin did. Can you actually see him going out into the desert at Searchlight and drawing thousands of TEA Party supporters to hear him take it to Obama?

That doesn’t matter.

Romney can use Ryan to win women. Perhaps not a majority, but a good enough portion to win the total. Lots.

That is the thing though. In order to win, Romney must lose some of his mind-control thinking.

I see no evidence he is willing to do that yet.
