Some people don’t have a choice as there are not a lot of gas-fired plants in the Northeast. Electricity from coal is still cheaper to produce than with natural gas.

Just give the EPA time and they will drive the cost of Nat Gas up too and/or make it scarce.
It is what they do.

As consumers, we get no choice in the source of the electricity that comes into our comes. If we did, I'd chose coal. It's much cheaper to produce each MW with coal than natural gas. But natural gas is 2nd. All the 'renewable' energy sources cost double or triple that per MW than NG. (I used the quotes because geothermal sources are depleted as they use them.)
